SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – A Nite Oil Tanker truck containing thousands of gallons of fuel experienced a mishap when oil was being exchanged sometime around 3:30PM today, April 15, 2013 in Sea Cows Bay opposite the now closed Dominos Gas Station.

Several fire officers from the British Virgin Islands Fire & Rescue Service were on hand along with a fire tender and a utility truck, which brought a quantity of sand to assist with absorbing the spillage.

Station Officer Melvin Jeffers of the Virgin Islands Fire & Rescue Service told this news site that a staff member of VI Motors [Sydney], “was refuelling a truck to take to the station and apparently one of the valves was shut off” which resulted in the spill.

According to the Officer, an estimated 1000 gallons of fuel was leaked during the mishap. He expressed that the fuel was not highly flammable but all precautions were being taken to ensure there was no danger to the situation.

Officer Jeffers indicated that the VIF&R responded immediately to the mishap in order to prevent or minimise the chance of any vehicular accidents occurring as a result of the spillage.

the fact that someone marked dislike shows me that they are not responsible in looking at the consequences either. How can someone NOt want the driver to be held accountable? And how long does it take to realize the valve was off? 1000 gallons worth? where was he?

I don't understand what the Fire Officer is trying to say....How can there be a mishap if the valve was shut off....if the valve is shut off how can fuel pass through the hose in the first place...I think there is an error in his statement.............plz clarify..
