ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With 9 Men’s and 5 Women’s Teams, the 2017 Softball Season kicked off with the opening of the Mrs Harriette Skelton Fast Pitch League at the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Field on Sunday March 19, 2017.

Before action began, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, the Minister responsible for sports, had declared that he would be bringing a resolution to the House of Assembly for Softball, once considered to be almost “dead” by many ex-players and officials, to be named as a National Sport.

Re-joining of the Olympic Movement will put the sport right in the highlight of development and participation regionally throughout 2017, but for now attention was focused on home soil as That’s Ya Problem took on the Hawks.

A very one sided game ended in a 10-0 victory for That’s Ya Problem, who had 4 hits, 1 error and left 6 runners on base. The Hawks had 2 hits, 3 errors and left 5 runners on base.

softball is for ladies and old people....let us switch to baseball so that the youngsters could get scholarships and venture off to play with the pros

Since you're so misinformed there's an association for Baseball as well, the youngsters go away many times a year and compete in various leagues. Go watch paint dry.

Since its heyday in the 50s thru 70s, softball once the premier sport in the VI/BVI has been on a steady decline and is dying on vine and in need of urgent CPR. A new season has started but is it a signal of revival? Will it being designated as the national sport a bright hope for softball renaissance or will it be just a flash in the pan?

Thus, for a reawakening, softball will require commitment, marketing, management/leadership, dedication and resources. Upgraded and new facilities in Road Town and villages are needed to revive and sustain the sport. An ad hoc committee for revival/renaissance should be established.

For starters, reestablish the sport at primary and secondary schools, promote local competition at various levels, promote inter-island competition( VI and USVI), participate in various international competition, create an entity to teach the basic elements of the game, decentralize sport out of Road Town, put sport back into the villages (Sea Cow Bay, East End/ Long, VG), engage former players into the rebirth effort, set goal of sending a men and women teams to the 2020 Summer Olympics (Games of the XXXII Olympiad) in Tokyo....etc.
