Small Islands conference wraps up with a taste of VI!
The Territory’s H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) served as the host organisation for the conference, which is held every two years under the auspices of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISSA).
Under the theme, "Globalisation: Islands Adapting to Change," one of the main objectives was to stimulate discourse on how islands across the globe, and in particular the VI and the wider Caribbean, are adapting to 21st century challenges was held from May 29 through June 1, 2012.
The Moko Jumbies and the Razor Bladez Fungi band proved to be a delight to the overseas delegates. Furthermore, booths with arts and crafts highlighting the artistic talent of Virgin Islanders were on display and up for sale.
Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn was in attendance and mingled with the participants.
Prior to the cultural event, President of ISSA Professor Grant McCall expressed his appreciation to the organisers, HLSCC students and participants for an interactive and entertaining conference at a short closing ceremony that was held at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium.
He was also pleasantly surprised that several Caribbean politicians took time out from their busy schedules to speak at the conference.
The next conference will be held on Jersey Island in 2014, with HLSCC President Karl Dawson handing over the flag and plaque to a Jersey Island representative.
