ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Popularly known for speaking out candidly on any issues of concern to him or others affected in the Territory, host of the EDM Show Mr Edmund Maduro to call on the powers that be to treat small business owners equally as big ones. He made particular reference to small bars.

On his radio show aired last night November 14, 2013 Mr Muduro blasted policy makers for discriminating against owners of small bars especially on Sundays. “When you and I go to the little bar, the little bars, it is only the little bars that are restricted, when it comes to Sunday you can only go up until 9 P.M.,” he highlighted.

Mr Maduro regarded this as highly discriminative. “With every other business in this country, whether they are owned by natives or not, you could go to any hour in the morning.”

He condemned the provisions where wholesalers who sell alcoholic and other beverages to the smaller businesses are allowed to operate like a bar themselves. “There is also the provision where the wholesalers who sell the drinks, the beer, the etcetera to the bars and restaurants are being allowed to operate like a bar. You can go in there and buy a single beer and drink it again, that is abusive,” he pointed out.

According to the radio talk show host, those are acts that are exposing the people of the Virgin Islands to ‘dangerous’ situations.

He alluded to the “days of old” when the country was fed primarily by the little bars. “We must not forget our first businesses, our first groceries, the first place where we ever went to by a pound of flour, a pound of sugar, pound of cornmeal, two cent lard, two cent butter, was in these same little rum shops,” said Mr Maduro.

“Greed and the love of money: the love of money is the root of all evil but greed destroys an entire nation,” he stressed. He also challenged the Virgin Islands to not forget where it came from otherwise it would not recognize where it is going. “… and it is simple that we have lost all common sense of direction and development and are doomed to perish.”

Pointing fingers at the governance of the territory, Mr Maduro said good leadership is terribly lacking. “Good leadership is what we want.”

He said this is something that is very simple because to lead a country there must be love for brothers and sisters. “We must love our brothers and sisters as we love ourselves and by so doing make the love for money a tool, not a master.”

Government needs to stop giving license to bars at church gate.
Church is there, people at gate or across the road apply for rum bar license and they get it
No respect for God. Government via environmental Health needs to check these things and cancel license
