ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Sister Islands of Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Virgin Gorda put up a strong showing in the Zone I Championships on Friday February 28, 2014 at the A.O. Shirley Grounds to prove they will be giving their more illustrious Tortola-based counterparts a run for their money come the Primary School Championships.

Representing those islands were the Claudia Creque Educational Centre (Anegada), Cornerstone (VG) and Jost Van Dyke Primary Schools and despite perhaps not having received the same standard of respect that some of the ‘bigger’ schools received earlier in the series of Zonal Championships, their athletes showed a great determination and no little competitive desire.

Also taking part in the Zone I games were First Impressions, Agape, Little Rainbow and Pelican Gate Schools, who also put up some stirring performances.

With the top two finishers in each event progressing and the two next best from all the zones joining the competitors in the Finals on March 13, 2014, the final event listings will make some interesting reading as some ‘big’ names from the stronger Zones will be missing out.

The Grand Finale will, according to organizers, still see a Champion Primary School named, but with the new format, which has got many a P.E. Teacher talking about the pro and cons, it is hard to see how it can truly be billed as a Championship for Schools as the system makes it more orientated to Champion athletes, based on times.

All the schools will not have full representation across the events so the points totals gained will not be a true reflection. However, as an example, in the Carifta Games a country with 70 participants is more likely to score more points than country with just 20 participants.

A more accurate title would be an age group Championship in much the same way as the International Athletics Federation has a Youth Championship (17 and under) and a Junior Championship (19 and under), then again the BVI Athletics Association already has a Youth Championship which it will be inviting athletes from the Primary School Championships to take part in.

Additionally the Zonal Champions will now be awarded Trophies and possibly Medals and there will be Divisional Champions at the Finale, but not a Victor or Victrix.

Progressing from Friday’s concluding Zonal round include Trayesha Emmanuel in the Girls 13 Plus 100 and 200m , Shaunte White in the 13 Plus 400m and U13 Long Jump, Kylah Vanterpool (2nd in the 400m) as well as Kimberley Howell in the U13 100m and 300m.

All of them represent Claudia Creque Educational Centre and will be joined by Emmanuel in the Long Jump, the U13 4 x 100m Relay team, Javiola Hodge in the U11 Ball Throw and Mykah Hastick (U9 Ball Throw).

Elsewhere in the Girls Division, Jost Van Dyke’s Beyonce Callwood finished second in both the 13Plus 100 and 200m to reach the finals.

Callwood also finished second in her Long Jump to progress and Kristin Abraham (Agape) came second in the 13 Plus 100m. Abraham later won the U13 200m with Triona Palmer of Jost Van Dyke Primary second. Kayla Manning of First Impressions was second in the U13 300m, Palmer won the 600m with Asha Hyndman (FIPS) second.

Agape also came second in the U13 4 x 100m and Sprint Medley Swedish Relay, as did Tanya Christopher for her school in the Shot Put, just behind Demiqua Sheene of Cornerstone.

In the U11 80m, Amia Todman (FIPS) progressed as did Anira Huggins (Cornerstone) and in the U11 150 both Kiandra Meyers (Agape) and Hannah Francis (Cornerstone) will compete on Finals Day.

Meyers also won the 300m race and will be joined by Jade Alexander Smith of First Impressions, who also won the Girls U11 4 x 200m Relay. Jost Van Dyke won the 4 x 50 Stage 1 Relay and the same school will be represented by D’Kayla Chinnery.

In the Boys, Ellie Blemur of Jost Van Dyke won the 13 Plus 100m and Little Rainbow’s Tyreque Collins came home first in the 200m, Tristan Palmer crossed the line first in the 13 Plus 600m and he also anchored the JVD quartet of Blemur, Shamoy Frett and Ronaldo Gomes to victory in the 4 x 100m.

Deondre Stevens of Rainbow had a sprint double in the U13 100 and 200m and Agape School’s Wayne Reid and Jhared Jones finished 1, 2 in the  U13 300m. The First Impressions pair of Lucas Santos and Juston Smith matched that in the 600m and then the school pipped Agape to the line in the 4 x 100m relay.

In field events Requan Garraway and Guillame Parkins both progressed to the Finals with leaps of 3.75m and 3.45m respectively, whilst Christian Abraham of Agape won the U13 Shot Put with a distance of 6.53m.

Many others have also qualified for the Finals, scheduled for March 13, 2014, but the full list has not yet been made available. Timings and Distances need to be checked to decide on the next two competitors in each event, who will qualify as lucky losers and the points totals for each School across the Zones added up to see who will be declared Champions.

Imagine what the Sister Islands children would do if we had the facility like there is in Tortola. Mr. Minister we need better facilities on the Sister Islands. We also need qualified trainers. Reds is doing a great job but needs all the help he can get on VG. Kudos to all those who help the children on these three islands but government can do better

Jost Van Dyke students have a lot of potential, they get no training but yet perform well given the circumstances. I wish we would get more support in these areas and so many others so our children can excel! Living on these islands really limits you
