Sistah Joyce retains Calypso Crown
“Calypsonians need to get their facts straight,” Searles told reporters moments after she was re-crowned Queen of Calypso. Sistah Joyce as she is better known, represented her crown with two strongly worded and well composed songs ‘60 years strong’ and ‘Who it hurt it hurt’.
At the end of the night judges found her to have gained the most points giving her the edge over the others as she walked away with the prizes for best lyrics, best arrangement and best overall singer.
The 3rd runner up was King Paido, 2nd runner up was Falco and 1st runner up was Luther B.
Nine persons challenged the 2013 Calypso Queen for her crown this year and they appeared in the following order in both of their performances: 1. King Henry doing ‘Candle in the dark’ and ‘I want a divorce’; 2. Shereen – ‘Equal Status and World Calypso’; 3. Mighty Ley Ley doing ‘Diamond Jubilee’ and ‘BVI lottery’; 4. Princess Didi with ‘This Young Lady’ and ‘I am Festival’, 5. King Paido – ‘Hope after emancipation’ celebration and the ‘Common Sense Party; 6. Luther B who was the 2012 calypso King did 'Youth man' and ‘Never Forget’, 7. Falco – ‘Crime Free Festival’ and ‘Politician’, 8. Sistah Joyce - ‘60 years strong' and 'Who it hurt it hurt; 9. Mighty Macko - 'Our 60 year Festival anniversary' and 'Searching me Arsenal' and 10. Orginga – ‘Overload’ and ‘Can't wait for the 60th’.
Very confident that she had given it her all Sistah Joyce was very emotional about the way some of her competition attempted to attack her personally in their songs. “To me it don’t matter who sing about me or who sing on me just get it straight,” she said. She recalled shedding tears back-stage, saying that calypso can be considered controversial which makes it matter less when persons attack her personally in their songs.
“You don’t have to come and sing about oh I went jail and I need to know where I come from. Even if I wasn’t from here because I speaking out, things rough in the BVI; a lot of people afraid to speak out but I ain’t afraid, they can’t send me nowhere I born here and when I say that I don’t mean to bring down Caribbean people I have two Caribbean parents… ” she said.
Noting that retaining the crown makes her feel extremely great Sistah Joyce said that she ignored those who called her cock-roach in their song. “They lucky I didn’t drop it on them, I am a person who love to speak out but when they do it the wrong way I prefer to leave it alone,” she added.
She said that for now she is going to be more focused on her reggae singing while maintaining that she will continue to defend her crown until destiny decides it’s time for her to put it down and is dethroned.
She poured her heart out to reporters about her challenges in trying to secure a job and was blatantly rejected in many instances for having a jail record. She said that some entrepreneurs told her straight that they were not go to employ her, “A lot of people I went to for job, some of them basically come right out and tell me boy you get hold for weed if it was something else but people don’t know that.”
But at the end of the day her response to the question of whether she feels marijuana should be legalized was, “No, Nooo.”
