Should residents brace for increased water bills?
The issue of poor water supply is a major issue across the spans of the VI and according to Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool the government is very focused on addressing these.
He was at the time addressing the question of status of the pending merger of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) and the Water and Sewerage Department W&SD). “It’s still a consideration, it’s taking time, we did some study on it. It’s not taking a high priority now because of a number of things we want to do,” Hon Vanterpool told this news site during the recent interview.
He said that presently they are having the BVIEC focused on moving ahead with the Phase 5 expansion of the power plant while W&SD is to address the sewerage project that is currently in progress and to expand water supply to the Territory.
“That’s a project we are working on right now where we want to put in more reservoirs, send more water pipes to the various villages that don’t receive it now and also connect all of the reservoirs, the one in Sea Cow’s Bay, the in Sabbath Hill and all of them, connect them so that they can all supply water around the country,” he explained.
He said that they are keen on discontinuing the ‘water rash’. “We want to discontinue this water rash thing that we have where many places its 12 hours … and sometime some places only gets three days a week. That is backward.”
He anticipates that in the next six to twelve month 24 hour water supply with be realized for the entire Territory. “Of course if you receiving water 24/7 it might cost you some more because you are using more so that’s what it’s going to be like,” he said.
The Works Minister at a press conference held at Maria’s by the Sea on July 23, 2013 had announced that the two entities would have been merged effective January 1, 2014 and assured that no jobs would have been lost in the process. He was not clear on the rationale behind the merger but had said that they had already been set up to deal with the merger.

Where did you get your information that Wartsila is taking over the EC?
You sound like somebody in the know, so you should behave better that this.
Please stop spreading your misinformation and ignorance.
The soil sampling is being done by the EC, not Wartsila.
Wartsila will be SELLING generators to the EC, not BUYING the EC.
Phase V is critically needed.
BVIEC is not in the red. Phase 5 is needed. Wartsila is not funding Phase 5.
The reason Pockwood Pond was built was to give the EC room to expand and to move generation out of a residential area. To put a generator there, would be to go backwards.
The generator for JVD is rented not bought, so that repairs can be done to the subsea cable that brings power from Tortola.
You appear to be a unhappy employee of the EC, who wants to spread rumours and misinformation.
If you have an issue about raises, take this to management or Labour, not on VINO telling untruths.
Please, STOP, STOP, STOP, STOP your ignorance.
