ST. CROIX, USVI — A United States Virgin Islands (USVI) man was shot in the ankle in the wee hours of Friday morning, March 29, 2019, while in the Watergut area, USVIPD Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has announced.

Police were dispatched to the area at about 4:5 a.m on Friday after being notified of the incident by the 911 emergency call center. Upon their arrival to the scene, officers met a male victim with a gunshot wound to the ankle.

The victim told police that he was walking in the area, heard someone calling his name and this person—who the victim said he was unable to identify—suddenly started discharging shots. The victim stated that he immediately starting running to evade the bullets, but later realized that he had been shot in the ankle, Mr Dratte said.

The victim was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital via ambulance. The case is being investigated by the USVIPD’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (C.I.B.), Mr Dratte said.
