FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI — Two individuals were shot during an incident that occurred at the ballpark in Estate Profit, St Croix, [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD), Commissioner Delroy Richards confirmed to The Consortium today August 15, 2016.

The publication was made aware of the incident by multiple sources last night, which occurred around 9:30 P.M. during a baseball game at the popular sporting facility.

According to Mr. Richards, following the 911 notification that shots had been fired in the area and that a car had been riddled with bullets, officers and two ambulances descended on the scene, and found an individual in the vehicle with multiple injuries about his body. That individual, whose identity was not released, sustained gunshot wounds to his upper body and one gunshot wound to his leg, the commissioner said.

“While on the scene police also got a call that there was a second person who was driven to the emergency room who sustained a gunshot injury to the buttocks,” Mr. Richards said. He said that that victim, a male as well, confirmed that he was at the ballpark, heard shots rang out and later realized he was been injured by gunfire.

The victim found at the scene — currently undergoing treatment — was also transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center to be treated for his wounds.

“The area was saturated with officers looking for suspects, and we’ve gotten a description of a vehicle suspected to be involved,” Mr. Richards said, adding that investigators are working on the case, but he hasn’t been updated since late Sunday and could not comment further on the matter.

While police were investigating the Estate Profit shooting, police communication devices began buzzing with reports that someone had called in making mention of a shooting that apparently occurred in Mon Bijou around the same time. But Mr. Richards said the reported incident did not appear on the force’s ShotSpotter, the V.I.P.D.’s system that detects when and where gunshots are fired. And he said a police investigation returned with no evidence that any activity had taken place.

“We’re not even sure that the report wasn’t an attempt by someone to divert police from what occurred in Estate Profit,” he said.

The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of those involved in yesterday’s shooting, to call the Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 ext. 5579 and 5557. Residents can also contact 911, Crime Stoppers V.I., the chief’s office at 340-715-5548 or the commissioner’s office at 340-715-5506.
