FRENCHMAN’S CAY, Tortola, VI – Supporters for 1st district representative Andrew Fahie were peeved last evening, Monday October 24, 2011 when a woman interrupted a speaker and angrily told them it was late and she wanted to sleep.

The Caucasian woman, who left quickly after her outburst, had said, “Excuse me it’s mid night some of us are trying to get some sleep.” The incident occurred at 11:28 p.m. during the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) rally held next to Kelly’s Bar at Frenchman’s Cay, West End.

At the time, At Large candidate Zoe Walcott-McMillian was at the podium, but she did not miss a beat.

Unfazed, she told the small group of supporters, “Now you see what I talking about, you see what I talking about the blatant disrespect. The people of the first district you know what you have to do. We are here for equitable representation for everybody, but we will make sure that our own is taken care of.”

The At Large candidate continued: “No private interest groups....I get jumpy now. When you go to the polls Election Day and if you don’t want that nonsense to continue... you see that there because they feel the other side coming in - you send them a message. We want 13 this time. We will be our own opposition.”

And while some may have been sympathetic to the situation, many left the meeting grumbling that the woman “was out of place”.

Meanwhile, this news agency will try to ascertain later this morning what are the rules and regulations for having public political meetings.

Zoe, when I read forty negative posts yesterday from aother presentation you made, I asked myself "why the people don't leave you alone?" But after reading this, I realize they were right. If an annoyed resident asked you to hold the noise down because it was late, what has that to to with the other team, and how do you propose to stop that type of behaviour. The woman was expressing her freedom and right of speech. Exactly what was it you meant to say? This is utter nonsense!! Stop making a fool of yourself think before you speak please!

It is blatantly disrespectful to create a disturbance at that hour of the night! I agree with the "Caucasian" woman. Had she been one of us, would you have reacted the same way Ms. McMillan? Be careful ~ your prejudice is showing! There is absolutely no need for a bunch of politicians to be out late at night using loud speakers and raising their voices after 9:00 pm in a RESIDENTIAL AREA! There is such a thing as common sense! People need to get their rest for work the next day and children have to go to school. There is also a very pricey resort very close by and I'm sure the guests there were not impressed either. Have a little respect for your constituents Andrew!

You would think that the Minister of Education would have more respect for school children trying to sleep on a Monday night. The same happened in Apple bay last week....very noisy very late.

It is also common courtesy not to be shouting on a microphone so late at night. There is absolutely no need for these rallies to go on till so late at night. Furthermore a person complained about the noise, it is irrellevant whether the person was white, black, chinese, indian or from mars - we are talking about a human being not being able to get peace and quiet in the privacy of their own home. Unfortunatly common courtesy is not so common in the BVI, nobody seems to care for their neighbours.

People you all talking nonsense the woman is out of place. This was not a Jam it was a political meeting two weeks before election. I agree with Zoe the woman just showed her hatred for the party. If she had a legal ground to stand on she should have called the police. It was the proper and respectful thing to do. Andrew is the district rep. I agree they smell NDP coming back and their rude behavior has started again. It was not even 12:00 o clock. She should be charged and brought before a court of law for her rudeness and unlawfulness. The NDP supporters will come on here and try to do damage control but this incident is the very reason why I voting VIP all the way. I rather vote VIP and put a good seven together. And despite what some of you all simple people might think race does matters.

There is a legal issue here. After 9pm in a residential area there is bye laws about noise levels. So the woman was right no matter the color of her skin. If they had been outside my door I would of asked them much earlier to keep the noise down, she was probably at the end of her tether when she had an outburst. She was within her rights.

What colour is her father-in-law? She needs to stop pulling the race card. Lets go and hold a debate outside of her house at midnight on a work night with the volume up high and see how soon she wants it shut down. All of these politicians have to have respect for people that live in the area regardless of colour.

I read the article over and over again hoping to see that ZOE did not say what she said. Maybe the lady could have asked in a better way, Maybe the rally should have been over earlier or maybe all parties were in their legal right. But what was wrong, was Zoe, who is seeking a territorial at large seat to incite racist under tones to get votes. Her reference to the Lady's action and the other party was totally insensitive. I am a firm believer of taking care of your own First, second and third but you must also take care of your guests as well.

I am not sure of the time stipulated in law as I have been out of the Police force for a long time, but political meetings should end at 11pm. Perhaps a current Police can give the facts in case the law and time has been revised. In any event, race should not have been brought into the picture, and Zoe it is time you realize that the white race as a group (not individually) controls 99% of this world's economy. No, don't stoop to anyone because of money, but realize that diplomacy is necessary in race relations. Imagine Zoe going to represent us in Canada, USA, UK, France, etc and carrying this racial prejudice in her closet.......not gonna be successful.

If the woman felt that way, why did she not make a police report and have it handled from that end. She was totally out of order. Zoe has been abroad representing this Territory in Hong Kong, US, Seychelles and we have continually kept in touch with each other from our days at St. George's Primary School. Your assertion that she is racist is absolutely absurd. I want to encourage Zoe to not allow these persons to distract her. Remember what I told you last week. You were born a LEADER, and when you aspire for GREATNESS there will be many that will try their utmost to tear you down. I've been here long enough to know that the locals do not support each other. BE YOU.

Well while some people have quickly made this a racial issue maybe just to hate on Zoe, I fail to see where race comes on. I think she was referring to people not from here. Don't deny the fact that the BVI is known to have very mannerly and respectful people who would never be so disrespectful to people regardless of which party they supporting. We know too well too that a lot of ppl come here and behave differently. But regardless, the point is Zoe was not being a racist. Please justify where she has been before you all jump to all sort of conclusions. This untruth that is spewing out of some ppls mouth in the name of elections could be damaging for the VI as a whole..Be smart my ppl!

She was DAMN WELL RACIST!! Don't try to sugar coat it with NONSENSE!!!! She has all of Omar spanish people up and down behind them so it has NOTHING to do with being not from here, it has to do with the fact the woman was white! I agree the woman was a bit rude to shout out in that way but Zoe should've simply ignored it and keep goign on with her speech. There is a perception that NDP rolls out the red carpet for whites only while pissing on their own, and that's where she was going with this! They were saying NDP this and that, sell out to whites, they only want whites, a whole load of BS!!! But they're the ones who really sell out our country and now WHITES have to review our budgets WHITES have to tell us how to spend a dollar WHITES at the FCO are the reason they couldn't get their $15mil from CDB. Again, I'm not a racial person, but VIP and their idiot candidates need to be for real man!!! This black and white nonsense, from here not from here nonsense need to stop! There are many voters on the list right now who are not from here but are Belongers! They own property, have families and THEY VOTE! If the woman was rude she was rude, taht's all ZOe had to say. What does a white woman shouting about noise at almost midnight have to do with NDP???? How can anybody take Zoe and her colleagues seriously? My god man!!! I guess when we see a black cat walking pass an NDP launch we can safely say it's VIP's obeah spy? Cut the BS MAN!!

Funny many Myron, we knew you would be the first to jump. But allow me to clue you in. As a poster said "Zoe father-in-law is white" and her brother in law is caucasian as well, with two mullato nephews. Trying to pull the race card is quite a strech even for you. Zoe talked about equitable representation which means for White Virgin Islanders, Spanish Virgin Islanders, Islamic Virgin Islanders, Guyanese Virgin Islanders, and so on. What you need to stop doing is paying people to blog, harass Zoe voters at rallies and trying to bad talk the girl. When she defend your baldhead behind, I tell her she had never know the really Myron is. I sure she see the real you now. It amaze me how ayo talking, because anywhere else the woman could not do that regardless of her race.
    • WOW (25/10/2011, 10:38) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
First off, the mention of the race of the woman was not necessary, then how did Zoe determine that she was from a small interest group? Then she became contradictory when she said: The people of the first district you know what you have to do. We are here for equitable representation for everybody, but we will make sure that our own is taken care of.” Then: No private interest groups….I get jumpy now. When you go to the polls Election Day and if you don’t want that nonsense to continue… you see that there because they feel the other side coming in – you send them a message. We want 13 this time. We will be our own opposition.” None of her utterances make a bit of sense!

Guess why, becuase their parents had them here 30 add years ago, and now they are coming home to roost. Oh how I wish that the lady is a BVIslander and or Belonger and can vote, and that she will show Ms. Zoe what the other side and their private interst groups can do with an X. You missed the bus on this one did you? I am sure that 99% of all posters will agree that THE WOMAN WAS RUDE for the way she went about it. However, why was her race mentioned, does it matter? Why didn't it just say a person living nearby was complaining! The woman was rude, we get that! If Zoe simply ignored the person that woudl be fine. Nobody is arguing about the woman's outburst. They are commenting based on Zoe's STUPID rant afterwards!! What does special interest groups and NDP have to do with a woman that has trouble sleeping because of ignorant noises? LMAO!!! All she had to do is tell the woman she's rude and disrespectful and keep going! Next they will say NDP paid the woman to come down there to interrupt them? What a stretch!! Does that clear it up for you now? The woman was rude, but Zoe was STUPID for her response!! End of story, twist it how you like it won't change that fact! you think Zoe RACISt cos she wants to put BVIslanders first? Are you ppl kidding me? If our own politicians don't put us first what will become of Virgin Islanders? Some of you more foolish than is imaginable. It is a political rally. I am sure posters were up prior to the rally. Such rallies are held all over the world (and i am sure in the same country this individual hailed from). I am sure she would not have the kahunas to step up to a political rally in the US or UK and do that. Elections are every 4 years. The politicians have less than 2 weeks to keep their meetings with constituents. Certainly a visitor to this country can be more understanding at this time. I don't think Zoe's comments were racist at all. The woman was disrespectful to our potential leaders.

I agree citizens, residents.....etc should expect not to be annoyed with noise at their home close to 12:00 a.m. But some things are cultural and should be tolerated for a short period. Everyone knows that election is held every four years in the BVI; and means lots of noise at late hours during the heart of the campaign season. Further, every summer the BVI celebrates Emancipation (Festival). And during the festival season there will be lots of noise in some places. Moreover, when in Rome do as the Romans do. One has to think of the consequences before acting. This young lady had to have known that going into that crowd would not go over well. Jamaicans would have reacted the same way in Jamdown, Antiguans the same way in Wadadli, Kittishians the same in SKB........etc. Letr's be smart. I would not gone into Moss Point, Mississippi or Devonshire, England and told a crowd that they were making too much noise and I want to go sleep. No way.

Can't believe this woman switch immediately to that default reaction - RACISM. It says alot about her, and it says alot about the willful ignorance of some BVIslanders who can't help but be RACIST that so many people agreeing with her. Yes, the other woman should have spoken better, but let's face it, if you want to make yourself popular, like these politician trying to do, you don't go making racket outside people house on a Monday night. Das how you LOSE votes. Ayo people need to watch out, especially you politicians. People, they playing on our instincts to hate outsiders, encouraging xenophobia because they know it makes people feel RIGHTEOUS when they feel like someone is doing them wrong. So they fall back on the old slave days nonsense and make like white people still doing them wrong. 99.9% of white people here aren't racist - they wouldn't be here if they were. But what % of BVIslanders are racist? I don't know but this woman giving away her dutty prejudice against human beings based on their colour - something black people have fought against for centuries. Don't forget, Tortolans, we are one of the richest islands in the Caribbean. So when we hear some upstart racist like her making out like 'the whites' come in and 'take everything away from we the small people', don't follow your gut reaction and say, 'yes!'. Just stop. Use your brain. Look around. If we be smart, all a we can prosper and keep prospering. Don't study the small-minded, bad-minded people who say local people oppressed. They freeer than almost anyone anywhere, and they richer than most of the world. I don't study neither of these lying parties at election time. They all about getting the power to grant contracts so they can get theyselves richer. But I don't want to wake up one day to find some young dumb Tortolan who believed the hate spread by people like her has massacred a load of foreigners because they feel 'oppressed'. That's what happened in St Croix, and St. Croix spend 40 years OFF the tourism map because people knew it was a RACIST country. So be smart BVIslanders, don't let them trick you into taking the dark side. Love needs to prevail, not hatred.

Myron' paid bloggers ain going make no difference. We voting Zoe and VIP ALLLLLLL the way. I know Zoe personally, and can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that she is NO RACIST. One only has to take a look at her immediate family structure which have Barbadians, Guyanese, Vincentian and Caucasian. Your attempt to turn this into and play the race card will not work. If you dig deeper, you will also realize that Zoe dated the same WHITE (Caucasian) people you trying to accuse her of being racist of. Her point and which was a good one and I quote "We are here for equitable representation of everybody, but we will make sure that our own is taken care of". The NDP when in, neglected their people, Virgin Islanders except the select few. Virgin Islander is not indicative of a race, and she should know since most of her white school mates are not Virgin Islanders. The NDP interests have been squarely about Foreign interest groups with no interest but minimal to their own people right here in the Virgin Islands. Had Zoe jumped on the Hospital Project and its' mismanagement, the blogs would have been talking about her racism to Spanish people - when the real issue is that a major capital project such as the Hospital should never had non-Virgin Islanders working on it with the skills already here in the BVI. Ronnie totally disenfranchised their own people as evidenced by the behavior. The woman was in fact quite disrespectful, and this is in keeping with an NDP Government who have continued to disrespect their own Virgin Islanders (yellow, black or white). You should also be made aware that Zoe also agreed with you when she spoke in Frenchmans Cay, as she challenged locals for getting in their own way and that of their Virgin Islander sister and brother, and asked them to look to themselves. I guess she must be racist against locals as well?!?! I suggest you use this time to look to yourself as well. Your negativity on three lines of statement made by Zoe and your demeaning manner of address is not putting you in a positive light, and in fact contradicts your last sentence. Re-read again before submitting your comments.

Seems like the only 'paid bloggers' here are the ones shouting for Zoe! I aint no paid blogger for no party - read what I said. The main point is - watch out BVIslanders, don't let politicians trick us into finding enemies within when in fact we just need to be smart and look around us at what is good, and what needs attention. Don't get distracted by those who say 'outsiders this and that'. Outsiders done help the BVI get rich. Why you think so many immigrants coming here? Because we poor? No, because compared to our neighbors, we doing good. I agree, healing is what's needed, not opening wounds to get cheap support.
