Shaina M. Smith to run with NDP in upcoming elections!

- After a series of meetings with the National Democratic Party, Ms Smith is to announce her intention in the coming months
Virgin Islands News Online can confirm that Ms Shaina M. Smith will be running with the National Democratic Party (NDP) in the First District against the Virgin Islands Party’s senior member and candidate Hon Andrew A. Fahie in the upcoming general elections. Photo: Twitter

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After months of discussions with this news site’s senior sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), Virgin Islands News Online- the official source for political coverage in the territory- can confirm that former People’s Patriotic Alliance (PPA) member Shaina M. Smith will be a candidate with the NDP for the upcoming general elections.

Ms Smith will be running in the First District against the Virgin Islands Party’s senior member and candidate Hon Andrew A. Fahie. Another two candidates are expected to be contesting in that district.

Shaina flip-flopped?

Ms Smith has made a 180 degree turn after telling this news site in January of this year, via an exclusive interview, that she will not be running with the NDP and that “the country needs a new policy direction”.

In the same interview in January 2015 with this news site, Ms Smith claimed that “the PPA was in the process of organising a team to contest as a viable option in the next elations”.

However, early this month she flip-flopped and announced via a press release that her PPA will no longer contest the 2015 elections as her party was unable to recruit sufficient candidates to contest the polls.

Ms Smith never told the people of her new intentions in the press release; however, our news room was able to confirm that after a series of meetings with the NDP she is now confirmed as their candidate in the First District.

Ms Smith’s first time on the political stage was in 2011 when she ran At-large with the new founded PPA.

PPA dead?

The PPA has struggled to stay together after not getting any seat in the 2011 elections. Last year, another member Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru bolted and joined another upstart party- the People’s Empowerment Party- headed by Hon J. Alvin Christopher (R2).

Months after the last election, another PPA member- Khoy Smith- became inactive.

Ms Smith, when contacted, said “no comment”.

NDP filling slate with one new member

Smith’s crossover to the NDP fills 2 of the 4 open seats to be contested by the NDP. With Smith now in the First District and long time hopeful Dr Hubert O’Neal in the ninth, the party is still debating its Second District candidate. The two names being debated so far are former candidate Claude O. Skelton Cline and Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull who has started to campaign.

Kevin C. ‘OJ’ Smith will be back in the Third District, according to party insiders.

According to public opinion, the NDP is very unpopular, however, the voters are yet to see a viable alternative as of today.

Well that's 16 votes from our family (in district 1) that you've lost Shaina. What a shame. I had such high hopes for you. Sigh.
    • confused (27/03/2015, 13:38) Like (16) Dislike (12) Reply
So let me get this straight. You and your family had so much confidence in Shaina that you were giving her your 16 votes. Now simply because she has joined a party with a real chance of winning, you are upset? This is more to do with your hatred of NDP than Shaina. Keep your votes! Give them to Fraser, Alvin or Edmund.

@ Confused - You are obviously a VIP fan, who apparently chooses not to read the news, to check the NDP's record of achievements or plain and simple, resorts to selective amnesia every now and again or doesn't know how to tell the truth - which brings me to the realization that "YOU'RE LYING".

Some of you people sound so stupid. Unless you are actually in the booth to see where the x is marked you don't actually know who is voting for who - all you know is that the impression you have is that 16 votes will have been lost - and even then you don't know.
    • @@ (27/03/2015, 15:59) Like (7) Dislike (0) Reply
I agree. it is more than just party- it is policy, procedure, vision, and how they get there. Their goals which were totally different from what Shaina wanted to represent. So what happened? money talk? as a party member, you have to vote with your party. So you lost individual support because of what you are doing.

NDP has: Shaina, Mitch, OJ, Marlon, Myron. Where is the VIP's youth team? The country needs a new direction with the youth at the helm. They often say too young, but never too young to be used! I wish these youngsters the best in their pursuit of leadership positions in their country.

NDP be real, be realistic, Shaina is a sure seat at-large. Why waste a good talent in the first.. As a matter a fact Shaina would be your surest seat at-large. At-large Shaina will pull the most votes. but, again why did Shaina accept that first district, she selling herself short. Shaina has the best TV show, non political, solutions, solutions to our problems is her focus she explored good and practical solutions. I don`t know her and she doesn1t know me, I watch her shows. I think she is a good talent. Fahie will not lose no matter who run against him. Hannibal another good guy with a good heart and good intentions. Hope VIP use him at-large

So she will get the most at large votes because you know her? How many votes you have, 4,000? She will NOT get the most at large votes running with PPA or independent. She won't be stupid to run with VIP under Fraser so her only other choice was NDP 1st District. If NDP had an at-large slot open OJ would have been better suited as a sure shot if you want to call it that. She wants a chance to win and get in, this is her only chance this go round. She finally started to think realistic instead of being in dreamland!

If you think these bloggers refreshing and blogging over and over with the same £$%^ will change anything, think again! NDP has young bright people on their slate. VIP has some recycled talkers on theirs. Let us see who the BVI voters will elect this time around. Fahie has been in power for 16 years, Fraser for 16 years, on PEP, Alvin has been in power over 20 years. They are now telling us what needs to be done in their Districts, after they have been representatives and even Ministers. Both Fraser and Alvin have both been Deputy Leaders, and they still telling us it's NDP fault why simple things are not addressed in their District. To the person talking about NDP hating District 1, you know that is NONSENSE!
