Shaina M. Smith to contest elections as a Territorial Candidate
Ms Smith told this publication today November 9, 2018, “I decided to leave to be a part of team of persons with shared values and vision for the country… I will be contesting as a Territorial Candidate.”
Virgin Islands News Online was the first to accurately break the news, reporting that Ms Smith had resigned from the NDP with immediate effect.
The party was formally notified at its Executive Meeting yesterday November 8, 2018.
Ms Smith told this publication today, “I am joining with a team that’s more progressive, one that really carries the success of the Virgin Islands and giving people hope for the future.”
She said, “I will share more as the Movement is ready to do so which will come in a couple of weeks.”
While not confirming, she is believed to have aligned herself with the Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton’s (AL) Virgin Islands Progressive Alliance (VIPA) wing.

Notably Former elected officials, Ex Deputy Premier R. Dancia Penn QC, J. Alvin Christopher, Dr Vincent G. Scatliffe, Keith L. Flax and Vernon E. Malone are among those to have aligned themselves with Third District Representative, Honourable Julian Fraser RA, to chart the course forward for a new political party—Progressives United.
Ms Smith in her resignation letter addressed to the party’s Chairman and President said the move is with immediate effect.
She resigned as both Chairman of the Women’s Association and the party itself.
Ms Smith is one of the organisers to have helped forced out, outgoing Premier and then party leader, Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL).
The NDP has split and continues to suffer the loss of numerous stalwarts ever since the recent election of Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (AL) as its new Chairman and Leader.
