ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Noting that there are a lot of key issues on the table, 4th District Representative and Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool, speaking at the Rotary Club of Road Town’s luncheon yesterday November 15, 2011 disclosed that one of the issues being urgently addressed by the Government is the sewerage problem in Road Town.

“The most crucial for us right now is sewerage, which we are already tackling. In fact contracts are intended to be let in the next two weeks... we have been mapping out a plan to address the short term issues of sewerage in Road Town, in the medium as well as the long term,” said Mr. Vanterpool, who also noted that he was engaged in a meeting all morning yesterday on the said subject and that meetings would continue throughout the week in effort to speedily address the sewerage issues plaguing Road Town.

He, however, did not specify what works the contracts would entail.

Furthermore, Minister Vanterpool said that Government, in an effort to hold true to its campaign promises is viewing Road Town as a capital from a comprehensive development perspective. “There has already been a study done and presented to the government on the suggestions about the development of the capital of the Virgin Islands. I am reviewing that one more time.”

He said one of the proposals that he has for Government is to institute as early as possible through legislation, a board to develop and manage the capital, which he said encompasses the 4th, 5th and 6th Districts and a small portion of the 3rd District.

“So we want to look at it from that perspective in terms of making our capital of the Virgin Islands one to be envied in the next four to eight years. And certainly we want to make sure that we make a lot of progress in the next four years. We would not let process of legislation slow us down. We will be putting together prior to the legislation what we call a Road Town Development Committee, which will begin to put some ideas together and eventually that committee will be elevated to a proper statutory board. You will hear about that over the next six months or so but in the meantime, within the next 30 days to next 45 days we will institute a Road Town Development Committee.”

The Minister said the plan is to include the various stakeholders including businessmen and women and to forge private/public partnerships.

Hon. Vanterpool also congratulated the Rotary Club for its efforts. “The Rotary club has always been on the frontline trying to improve the various areas especially in the lines of beautification and I would encourage you and invite you to continue along those lines. You will have my full cooperation with your ideas and you are welcomed to come forward with them as quickly as possible, you don't have to wait for the main group (Committee) to be developed.”

Adjustment to Wickhams Cay traffic lights

It was also disclosed by the Minister that they were working on some “little things” that would make a lot of difference if fixed. One of these, he said, was to make an adjustment to the newly installed traffic signals at Wickham’s cay 11. “There is a right turn into the Moorings on a red light by the new traffic light. That right turn is going to be stopped very shortly until we are able to create a third lane. In fact I have given instructions already to stop it and put up a sign saying no right turn. We (traffic) will continue on to the Delta area and turn and come back down into the Wickham's Cay area.”

He also said that adjustments would be made to stop signs approaching roundabouts. “There are issues how we approach the roundabout. A roundabout should have a stop away from the roundabout... The stop should be right on the roundabout so that you can ease down to the roundabout very quickly and keep traffic flowing. It is not a stop sign it's a give way.”

Ask the Ministry of Communications and Works if Fraser didnt already issue/have those contracts ready to go. Or at worst he was waiting for the Representative to bring in his contractors. So Mark just stop it.

If VIP did so good the NDP wouldn't be running up and down checking this and checking that. Don't talk it, bring facts! Tel us one project completed or even started PROPERLY between 2007-2011. First it's recession then when that doesn't work, it's they did a lot and now NDP will ride off them! Had a look at Road Town, our CAPITAL lately? Absolutely disgusting!! VIP did what? Give me a damn break! The last bit of 'sprucing' up our infrastructure got was under NDP with Paul Wattley as Minister of Works.

Joker, you really is a joker. Ayo blind people cant see that Fraser bit off more than he could chew. He tried to start up a whole bunch au projects, fully knowing he couldn't finish them, but wanted to established that he is the one that started something. Of course he had all those contract "ready to go", but dragged his feet on them until it was apparent that his position was in jeopardy and tried to finish them off days before election, causing a muck in the process. So of course now NDP has to step up and correct his rush jobs. Out of Fraser's own mouth, he said that no way anyone will take credit for his hard work; but I am here to tell fraser, I for one will give NDP all the credit after your mess is cleaned up

Just keep the people informed and make sure works are distributed as fairly as possible and you have nothing to worry about.

I have suggested many times that the lanes from the east to the Road Town roundabout should be switched over so that the right lane only turns right (round towards Fleming St) and that the left hand lane is for straight ahead to Waterfront drive and left by Bobby's. Its simple and easy and will ease traffic right away. It will also stop that race from the Tobacco Wharf lights to cross lanes.

That sounds fine however, what will happen to traffic coming from Scotia/Bobbys area toward the roundabout and want to go either on waterfront drive or flemming street? Drivers traversing from that direction would be blocked from the round about by the left-lane traffic trying to head to waterfront drive. Remember the stop lights by Columbian Emeralds affects traffic all the way back to the roundabout. When the light is red, traffic will back right up toward the round about and cause a bottle neck. Either way, something needs to be done about it! For starters, get the damn traffic police out on the road and do some work other than just ticketing for seatbelts, phones and tint! Our safety matters too! The biggest problem in that area is traffic speedign down the left lane then stopping and crossing over to the right just in time to get around the roundabout. Then you have traffic coming off the backroad where Legco/Customs/CCT is, and trying to cross straight over to the right, holding up traffic AGAIN! The police need to do their job and things will be a lot easier!

Mark is really an action man. Just got in office a week and already getting things done. Now this is what I like to see. Unlike the previous Minister, he's advising the public of his intentions and not just signing a contract and letting us know about it after the fact.

Mr Mark you on here talking pi$$ about making minor adjustments to Traffic Light at Wickhams Cay II, which is to stop East Bound Traffic from making a Right Turn into Wickhams Cay, what about West bound Traffic going into Pasea? Isint that the same thing? If your greedy Behind didnt stop the lights from going up at the corner we wont be here discussing it now.

It may be slightly more convenient as there isn't a blind corner and whats not.

No, with the lights located at the corner, there was provision in the design for turning lanes going both east and west. Now thats a fact, you can confirm with PWD
