Sewerage problem in RT top priority for Gov’t - Hon. Vanterpool
“The most crucial for us right now is sewerage, which we are already tackling. In fact contracts are intended to be let in the next two weeks... we have been mapping out a plan to address the short term issues of sewerage in Road Town, in the medium as well as the long term,” said Mr. Vanterpool, who also noted that he was engaged in a meeting all morning yesterday on the said subject and that meetings would continue throughout the week in effort to speedily address the sewerage issues plaguing Road Town.
He, however, did not specify what works the contracts would entail.
Furthermore, Minister Vanterpool said that Government, in an effort to hold true to its campaign promises is viewing Road Town as a capital from a comprehensive development perspective. “There has already been a study done and presented to the government on the suggestions about the development of the capital of the Virgin Islands. I am reviewing that one more time.”
He said one of the proposals that he has for Government is to institute as early as possible through legislation, a board to develop and manage the capital, which he said encompasses the 4th, 5th and 6th Districts and a small portion of the 3rd District.
“So we want to look at it from that perspective in terms of making our capital of the Virgin Islands one to be envied in the next four to eight years. And certainly we want to make sure that we make a lot of progress in the next four years. We would not let process of legislation slow us down. We will be putting together prior to the legislation what we call a Road Town Development Committee, which will begin to put some ideas together and eventually that committee will be elevated to a proper statutory board. You will hear about that over the next six months or so but in the meantime, within the next 30 days to next 45 days we will institute a Road Town Development Committee.”
The Minister said the plan is to include the various stakeholders including businessmen and women and to forge private/public partnerships.
Hon. Vanterpool also congratulated the Rotary Club for its efforts. “The Rotary club has always been on the frontline trying to improve the various areas especially in the lines of beautification and I would encourage you and invite you to continue along those lines. You will have my full cooperation with your ideas and you are welcomed to come forward with them as quickly as possible, you don't have to wait for the main group (Committee) to be developed.”
Adjustment to Wickhams Cay traffic lightsIt was also disclosed by the Minister that they were working on some “little things” that would make a lot of difference if fixed. One of these, he said, was to make an adjustment to the newly installed traffic signals at Wickham’s cay 11. “There is a right turn into the Moorings on a red light by the new traffic light. That right turn is going to be stopped very shortly until we are able to create a third lane. In fact I have given instructions already to stop it and put up a sign saying no right turn. We (traffic) will continue on to the Delta area and turn and come back down into the Wickham's Cay area.”
He also said that adjustments would be made to stop signs approaching roundabouts. “There are issues how we approach the roundabout. A roundabout should have a stop away from the roundabout... The stop should be right on the roundabout so that you can ease down to the roundabout very quickly and keep traffic flowing. It is not a stop sign it's a give way.”
