ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has revealed that several individuals who resided in the same compound of the Filipino woman believed to have succumbed from a suspected COVID-19 death, this morning, Saturday, April 18, 2020, has left the place of residence.

"We are aware that a number of persons residing in the compound have since left. We implore them to call the medical hotline [852-7650] so that we can effectively have these persons examined and or questioned so that we can determine status," Hon Malone said in a statement released today.

Extended lockdown is in best interest of VI - Hon Malone

The Minister was at the time speaking at an emergency COVID-19 broadcast alongside Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and H.E. Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert where an extension of the current 14-day lockdown was announced by the Premier beginning today, with details to be announced.

It should be noted that as of today Saturday, the territory is still under the original mandatory 14-days COVID-19 lockdown, meaning that it is still illegal for individuals to leave the confines of their homes unless they are designated as essential workers.

'The information received so far indicate to us that it would be in the Territory’s best interest to extend the curfew period while efforts continue to track and contain possible chains of transmission" Hon Malone said.

While the case is still suspected, he revealed that all indication shows that this the 52-year-old Filipino Woman may have come into contact an overseas source of the virus.

Victim had underlying medical conditions

Hon Malone said the now dead woman was also suffered from underlying medical conditions and was being treated at the Dr. D. Orladdo Smith Hospital before she succumbed to her condition.

He said authorities are awaiting 24 result confirmations from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) that were transported by the Regional Security System aircraft and that those results are expected later this afternoon.

"These samples were taken from the patient and 22 of her immediate contacts, as well as from case #3 who is now being retested to confirm his recovery status," Hon Malone said.

He promised to bring an update on the local situation and health outlook as soon as test results are released from CARPHA.

This is a big problem. I think they run because they are afraid of what people is going to do to them. Example: when the young lady flew into Jamaica from the UK and she tested positive for the virus, people were passing by her aunt house harassing her family and calling her family the Corona family.

Victimizing someone who is, or may be infected with Covid 19, is a clear example of ignorance in action.
This is a virus that can infect anyone. Some may never know they have it (asymptomatic), some may feel unwell or perhaps really sick like with flu, and sadly some will be unable to fight the virus and will succumb to it. Many of those unfortunate will be the elders among us. The ones this island can’t afford to lose. The ones with experiments, and wisdom, and common sense (not so common anymore). Irma took too many of them away. Let’s pull together as a community and protect those who are still among us. Comply with social distancing quidelines, practice scrupulous hand hygiene, don’t touch your eyes/nose/mouth/face. WASH your hands. Don’t listen to the conspiracy theorists. Don’t practice ignorance.
Protect yourself, your family, the greater community, young and old. Protect help and preserve the lives of the elders among us. We need them now, more than ever.

The people ran off in hiding not because of any illegal issues, they ran off because some of you were planing to burn down where they were living or attacking them. Blame the ignorant idiots for this, not the people for running off to hide. When the World Trade Center blew up, I was living in the States and Arab families left their neighborhoods in fear because people were planning to beat them up.

@ wow, I agreed with you. That is utterly irresponsible and selfish behavior. Where are they really fleeing to go. This kind of behavior is what can cause this virus to spread throughout the Territory. There is absolutely no excuse for this reckless and irresponsible behavior. Yes the lady was living at that apt. Complex, she test positive, the others were to remain there, let the authorities come to them, put them in quarantine, run test and declare them safe. But no, they choose to flee to go somewhere else. Supposed one of them already contracted the virus, can you imagine what can happen here.

With additional 34 Auxiliary personnel appointed how did this happen? The people in the complex would have felt protected and safe with details there. Second they could not have gone anywhere. Hope they aren't carrying the virus bc it will turn dissastrous. To them I say please turn yourself in for your sake and others. To individuals harboring them, you are doing them, the country and yourself a disfavour.

This is not the time for your kind of dialogue. They fled most likely becuase they are afraid of how the "on the fringe locals" will treat them. If those of you who are so lacking in compassion stop being so antagonistic and forthright with it in these blogs maybe, just maybe they would not have fled their abode, regardless of their immigration or health status.

They are probably more afraid of some of you in the general population and what you would do to them, than the law enforcement or government officials. The things I see in the blogs at times makes me say this cannot be the BVI of my forefathers/ancestors. What is wrong with some of you? Such anger and hatred for human kind! Do you have a soul?

The landlord should also have names.
Immigration dept should also have some ,if not all, on file and their photographs.
Publicly publush their photos and names in the media and newspaper and billboards.

When someone is wanted for committing a crime there is no problem in publicly publishing their photo in an effort to have them apprehended and or to be warned that they may or are dangerous.
        This is no different.
Breaking a mandated curfew and possibly infected with a contagious and potentially deadly virus fits all the bells and whistles.

if that some one is local then all the rules applies including posting their pictures, tasing them and police press briefings but publishing information on any other sector of this society is classified as discrimination. some persons goes public with all manner of obnoxious and slanderous comments about locals including our elected officials and that is all well and good: a person with an infectious disease becomes public knowledge in a timely manner an the powers-to-be wants to invoke the cyber act and asking for police investigations however the information was factual so much so that people for that neighborhood on the run

Scenario 1/ If they are over staying and run to someone to hide, The people taking them in is in big trouble with the law....Scenario 2/ If they run because they are afraid of getting tested, that put the people that taking them in life at risk, ..None of these moves is a good one from both a law and health perspective,.. Leave me to wonder. How reliable is this info of fleeing is...

These people need to be found tested and put on 14 days quarantine.
Get there names and contact numbers from the landlord. The lives of everyone residing in the BVI who abided with this 24 hour curfew for weeks are at stake.
From the medical inside, people being screened are not being honest nor calling/coming forward to state there status e.g. I was one who left the compound.
At this time your honestly would be greatly appreciated for this will ensure the proper regular assessment and treatment if needed. Therefore limiting spread

    So we have two things:
    - Ignorant locals threatening to burn the apartments, scaring the inhabitants into leaving.
    - Ignorant residents leaving the apartments and risking community spread due to fear of the virus/ignorant locals.

Either way, we are heading for a huge domino affect and I will only leave home as a last resort, as should everyone else.

We are supposed to be on 24hr curfew, but yet yesterday, persons who are employed at One local supermarket can be seen pushing carts with shopping bags though the street of same community of the deceased person.
Practically all night, even after the Premier's last advisory, scooters going back and forth in the area above the Purcell Methodist church. Too much traffic, pedestrian and vehicular in the area, day and night, and they are not all essential workers or even residents. We who live here are very concerned. We don't feel protected. Needs to have more law enforcement patrols.

In the very beginning it was said that the person living with deceased were tested and results are being waited for. Then further in this article it's being said the individuals should call the hotline number so that they can be questioned and tested .So which is it were they tested or not. And if Not this is a complete failure by the government.
Just like the school children say the this woman was are the hospital several time and was turned back and no one thought to test her. Even if they felt she was lying, once she showed symptoms why wasn't she tested? We all know what is out here in the air and people are getting sick and dying. Don't let the ways of other countries such as America be your guide cause you will have a major problem. If you following the news or have friends in America much of what is being said is people show up at the hospital with all sign of having this virus and are being sent home to die and possibly infect their family members. Don't Let The Nationality or Economical Status Be The Deciding Factor In How A Person Is Service. One Love B.V.Is

Those who fled the apartment are creating problems for themselves and nationals of this territory. Until they cooperate with the law no one of that nationality should be allowed in buisiness places. Further to that they should be placed under curfew until all are tested. They are a close nit community. These measures will help to curtail the spread of the virus. We are all vulnerable.
