ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Commissioner of Police, Mr Michael B. Matthews said a serving member of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has been implicated and charged in the recent $250 million drug bust in Balsam Ghut area, a story first reported by our newsroom.

According to the Commissioner, this is the largest drug bust made in the territory and has confirmed that Mr Liston Davis, 40, a resident on Tortola and Mr Darren Davis, 41, also a resident on Tortola and a serving RVIPF officer are currently in police custody.

Largest single drug seizure in VI

The officer has been a member of the RVIPF for over 20 years.

He said the bust occurred on Friday, November 6, 2020, by police during a covert operation at a property in the Balsam Ghut area.

“Upon the arrival of officers, persons at that location were seen fleeing the premises and at that time efforts were made to detain the individuals but we were unsuccessful. However, a further search of the actual location uncovered a large quantity of illegal drugs,” he said.

Mr Matthews added: “A total of 2,353 kilos of cocaine, I am told that is 2.3 metric tons, this was found in a container unit, a three-yard truck and a Ford Explorer jeep, all situated on this property. This seizure has a conservative estimated street value of some $250 million. It is the largest seizure made in the BVI and the largest single seizure in the history of the RVIPF.”

He said he was also advised by his UK colleagues that it was one of the largest seizures ever made by a UK force.

2 loaded firearms recovered

In addition to the drugs, two loaded firearms were retrieved from the scene, he informed.

He said officers subsequently conducted a search for the persons who were connected to the illegal items “and to date, two persons have been arrested, and investigations continue and may lead to further arrests.”

He continued: “I can now confirm that one of those persons arrested was a serving police officer in the RVIPF. Both individuals arrested and charged with the offences of Possession of a Controlled Drug with Intent to Supply, three counts each and Possession of Illegal Firearms. But, I do owe the public a level of transparency and openness as we respond to this difficult situation and I further advise that the two persons charged are Mr Liston Davis, age 40, a resident on Tortola and Mr Darren Davis, age 41, also a resident on Tortola and a serving RVIPF officer.”

He also reminded persons that people are innocent until proven guilty.

Matthews further said the RVIPF may require outside assistance to conduct investigations and, “we are already in contact with both the UK and the US law enforcement in that regard.”

Two more caught with $$

In the meantime, Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert said two are in custody after a boat capsized off the Tortola coast on Friday.

He said on Sunday, November 8, 2020, a boat that was reportedly stolen by a known criminal capsized off the coast of the VI.

He said $99,000 in cash was found on the boat, and the two individuals that were rescued are now in police custody.

“The investigation again is in the early stages,” he reported.

Your cynicism is disgusting. Thank God the police gave you something to break the monotony of your boring existence. What have you done for your country lately, or are you content to make public commentary as a lame attempt to sound smart? You should be commending the good and women of the force who took this kind of action.

That's not revenue for the Government. If they had find the $250M in cash, that would've been revenue.

DNA of these accused cannot be changed...No matter how long they were taken out of their updeislun country the updeislun characteristic cannot be taken out. Proven time and time again...same goes for the real Toluand...their character remains no matter where they dwell. The main reason that they are free to travel nationwide with no hassle.

This is why it is very important for the Chief of Police to an outsider. If it is a local, it would not get solved because everyone is related. It's time for us to stop playing politics. The BVI is out of control. The men on the streets are showing us that they don't care and in control of the island.

What is going on here? The local news site barely has anything compared to The Sun. Is it because it's UK-based? I thought we was together than this though. Matter-of-fact, aren't those photos supposed to be kept out of news circulation for investigative purposes? Come on ya'll, do better. Before they remove them...

Because the commissioner has to find away to bring more whites down here to get paid better than the local police. The initial work is done by the local police and whites come in and get paid far more and take the praise. That’s all that’s happening. The local police can work with the US why bring in British police? COP, it’s all a game for you’ll. When you leave a next white man has to come and get his share. The blacks putting in all the overtime while the white sleep and take the praise and more money. You’ll need to stop

you all can come here and bash the police as much as all you want, one bad police officer doesn't represent the entire rvipf, then again one is innocent until proven guilty, i say this to say that i am police officer and i will continue to enforce the law on you lawless people in the bvi, you guys always rejoice when an officer fall short, but that's ok, i am totally against corruption in any way or form, most of you who come on here and post, all you family sells the same drugs but you coming here and play angel, that's why i will continue to enforce the law on you lawless criminals here in the bvi and i will do it without favor or malice.

In his last days of his post, the RVIPF has made a big bust and an officer has been implicated and charged. Papurrr! Mr Matthews it seems that you're a grand masterpiece of folly. Your tenure in my humble opinion was mediocre at best but as your days are numbered in the BVI, suddenly you remember that drug busts, unearthing corruption in the force etc was within your purview.

Nothing you do in my opinion to prove your "War on Crime" was effective is worth a pound bag of salt. Your apparent incompetence since the beginning of your tenure has reached the heavens and the scales aren't in your favour. You are nothing more than a poser who left the temperate UK to enjoy the Caribbean "fun and sun".

It's a shame though that your fan boys will sing your legendary praises around the campfire. You can't fool the wise though. Just hurry and depart our beloved Caribbean shores please and dwell in the realm where weeping, wailing and the gnashing of teeth lives.

It's clear that Police personnel had something to do with this drug bust. What is also clearly IMPLIED is that Custom's/Immigration personnel are also involved. The crabs are trying to jump out the pot, but the British have the lid now guys.

So you think some of the British here aren't involved in other "illegal" activities as well? There is too much lax behaviour in laws in these British Virgin Islands for it to not attract criminals from near and far. So the Brits can send in whomever they want, as long as they investigate crime and corruption across the board and across ethnicities.
