ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Following the monstrous Category 5 Hurricane Irma on September 6, 2017 that left the territory in a state of total darkness due to downed electricity poles and cables, persons out of desperation and no regard for personal property began looting generators, even from businesses, including telecommunications companies.

This news site can confirm that there as been a rise in generator theft across the territory.

In an exclusive interview with Commissioner of Police (CoP), Michael B. Matthews, he confirmed that there has been a number of reports of generator theft throughout the territory, but unaware of it being "rampant".

"We did initially have some major issues with looting that including many generators, and we have reports that Flow and Digicel have had some small generators taken," said the commissioner.

The commissioner expressed that recently the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) have had reports of at least seven generators stolen.

He further commented that the thefts of the generators are not specific to a particular area but they are being stolen from different locations.

"Last week we executed a warrant and recovered a stolen generator and last night two persons were arrested in possession of two generators on a truck that they could not give account for," explained Mr Mathews.

The commissioner of police emphasised that his department is treating these offences like any other reports of theft.

He said, "Experience tells us that such goods are more likely to be the target of criminals during a crisis like the current one and therefore we will continue to seize any that persons cannot give a reasonable explanation for having in their possession."

"Secure generators with locks & chains"

Mr Michael B. Matthews is advising owners of generators to "put strong locks and chains" on all mobile generators, adding that they should even stamp it with a code or owner's name.

The commissioner disclosed to our newsroom that owners should keep specific information about their generators, including taking pictures in order to assist with identification.

Even if you bolt them down, they will find a way to steal them. I scratched a number on my generator and use a heavy duty chain with a lock and the B:;$ards still stole it when I was not at home. I went around looking for my S;:t and could not find it. If I had found my generator, the person who had/took it would be without limbs.

People know who the looters are but won't give them up, making them all complicit. Same set of people ready to a cept foreign aid. Not a whole lot different from the looting associated with cronyist corrupt givt. Reconstruction will now include bars on windows and security gates. That'll look nice in the tourist brochures.
