ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Gary Lester Evans, 52, of Lower Estate was found guilty of indecent assault when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at John’s Hole today December 12, 2011.

Evans, who was a pastor for 16 years, was accused of fondling a then 13 year-old student of the Elmore Stoutt High School where he had taught for many years.

The offence was reportedly committed on June 4, 2010 at the school.

Evans had entered a not guilty plea and the trial started on March 17 of this year. Some 7 witnesses were called.

It was reported that Evans touched the private parts of the VC while asking her the whereabouts of her mother. He had reportedly placed the student on his lap also and was only discouraged when the VC attempted to injure him with a piece of metal.

Evans had said that he hugged the student in an act of consoling her after she had indicated to him that she had difficulties with Mathematics.

Magistrate Tamia Richards informed Evans that the maximum penalty for his offense was 5 years imprisonment.

He has been remanded until Wednesday December 15, 2011 when he is to return for mitigation. Evan's lawyer Duane Jean Baptiste had made a request for mitigation to be done at another date so that his client could get more time to prepare himself since the issue of mitigation was a serious one due to the nature of the allegations.

You need to be clear on what Gary Evans is: Definition of PASTOR : a spiritual overseer; especially : a clergyman serving a local church or parish Definition of a local preacher: local preacher noun 1.(in early Methodism) a layperson appointed to supervise the congregation and conduct services between visits of a circuit rider.2.(in the southern U.S.) a lay preacher.

I am not trying to justify anything. The difference is important. Gary Evans was never a Pastor.

Mrs. Evans recently lost a son to death, Terry, and now she is going to lose another in the prison system. This must be a rough time for the family. My prayers are with you, Ms. Gwen. Keep the faith.

This a disgrace to say the least. This man can handle walk...He was a local preacher.???? Well how come the article not saying for which church.? Or is it because it is not one of the churches you all the call wayside. Tell us man he is a METHODIST local preacher. Imagine them even stop the lil girl mother from preaching...Just because she wouldn't drop the case. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Sometimes it is amazing how loudly ignorance shouts! The Young ladies mother (who should be prayed for and encouraged) could not drop the case even if she wanted too, the case was between the accused and the crown! I did not know just who the girl or her mother were but because of your unthinking, unfeeling, uncaring post I was able to figure it out. You have done no one any good by publishing your bias non sense. I hope that you can sleep well at night!

No I am not ignorant. We all know she couldn't drop the case but you all would have liked her to drop it. In other words don't let it go any further cause it causing shame on the church. Poor ah you. That's what you all are more concern about saving face instead of saving souls. Why isn't her mother no longer on the preaching schedule. Not even a courtesy call. What happen to the pain her family is going through. How is checking on them.

Anyone who wants to know the facts of why anyone is or is not on the preaching plan should direct that question to the Methodist Church office (494-2198) or to the person involved. If one is really interested in the truth instead of speaking rumours the answers are easy to find. You are adding to the pain of those involved with your posts. You sit in the judgement seat with your mind all ready made up talking things that you can not know. Can you look in to the hearts of all those involved and see what they are concerned with? Who and what gives you the right to proclaim that anyone is more concerned with saving face then saving souls? Why arent you in all of your rightepousness up at the prison or at the families home working on what you claim that others are not doing. I guess that it cost less to hide out and blog.

he should be given a hefty fine that should be paid to the young girl parents..he already lost his retirement benifits..plus the shame of being a pastor..give him that option..before sending him to jail...

Come on people. The man was teaching for years and never had an issue or complaint. So why now because they say he's guilty he's guilty? I'm not in support of the case.I'm a CRUCIAN and don't even know the man, but I had an experience with the B.V.I. justice system and they wanted or they did crucify me and sent me to jail for a fineable offense. Tortola public wanted me dead pretty much, when in fact it was fineable. The man never had a single complain before but now he is a criminal for the rest of his life. Only GOD knows the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall set him FREE.....

Just in case you didn't know this was one incident that came to light. Let the former assistant principal tell you how much she cover up because it going to hurt Auntie Gwen....Its a small community and often time when we try to cover up it does eventually come to light. His day has come.

If what you are saying is true then the former assistant orincipal needs to be brought up on charges for assisting in the crimes that were committed. Also How many young girls kept silent and even now will not talk? Wellsa you seem to live off of rumours. Are you enjoying yourself?
