Sarginson & Ruscheinski dominate 1st Aquathon for 2013

Aquathon winner Tom Sarginson managed to overtake Tash Ruscheinski not far from the finish after Ruscheinski had gained a good head start over Sarginson on the 5K run after being first to come out of the water in the 200m swim at Baugher’s Bay but yet third to kick off on the road. Photo: VINO

BAUGHER’S BAY, Tortola, VI – Tom Sarginson made it a come from behind win in a tough first aquathon for the year when the Dickie’s Duo Series continued on Saturday January 5, 2013 on Tortola.

Sarginson managed to overtake Tash Ruscheinski not far from the finish after Ruscheinski had gained a good head start over Sarginson on the 5K run after being first to come out of the water in the 200m swim at Baugher’s Bay but yet third to kick off on the road.

With Sarginson and Tash Ruscheinski being tied with16 points after two events- the first was a duathlon, it’s still anybody’s win with two more legs yet to go in the Dickie's Duo series.

“Well done to everyone who took part in the first aquathon in the Dickie's Duo series. It was great to see some new faces, and there were some fantastic run times to give the New Year a kick-start,” said Eleanor C. Morgan, who along with her husband Richard J. T. Morgan, coordinated the event.

Saturday’s race started at Baugher’s Bay and ended at Tortola’s Sports club. Following the 200M swim, the athletes kicked off towards Road Town and headed back East to finish at Tortola Sports Club.

There were fourteen (14) persons for the aquathon and two (2) athletes who only did the run.

The first race, aduathlon (run, bike, run) involved a 3km run, 6km bike, 3km run, which had started and finished at Tortola Sports Club on  December 15, 2012, and had seen the participation of ten (10) racers. First place in a time of 49 minutes was Katrina Crumpler, second was James Shearman (51.15), third was Alex Jarvis (51.30) and fourth was Russell Crumpler (53.30).

Mrs Morgan told the Virgin Islands News Online that the series is open to everyone. The aim of the series, she said, is to encourage people who might be interested in multi-sport but are daunted by the idea of a full triathlon. It is also great transition training for triathletes training for longer races (there are over 15 triathletes in the VI training for a half Ironman in San Juan in March (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1mile run!)).

Dickie's Duos, the duathlon and aquathon series, was started by Richard J. T. Morgan, a keen triathlete who is keen to encourage others to try multisport. Richard is part of and has been supported by the BVI Triathlon Federation.

The series is sponsored by Broadsword Communications, Deloitte and Ogier and KPMG.

According to Mrs Morgan, the prizes will be modest and probably trophies for the first three men and first three women at the end of the series. The first person in each category will get 10 points per race, the second 9 points etc. After two races, Peter Willmott and Tash Rusecheinski are tied on 16 points. In third place overall (second male) so far is Stefano Tasking with 12 points. Despite missing Saturday’s event, the second female after two races is Kat Crumpler, with ten points from her duathlon win. With three more races in the series, it is still wide open for anyone to build up the points.

The next event of the Duo’s Dickie series, a Duathlon, is on January 26 and will begin at Tortola Sports Club.

they're all allowed to wear what they want - for some reason the women seem to prefer to stay a bit more covered up.

What a great innovation; this is just what BVI needs to kick-start its Olympic Triathlon Team. Well done son (and daughter-in-law!)
