ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) have removed six scooters, six vehicles and arrested four persons in a weekend 'Clean the Streets' operation where the vehicles were confiscated for being unlicensed and uninsured.

The fire in a release today, March 18, 2021, said scooters were also seized for defective mufflers and persons were ticketed for various traffic offences.

According to the RVIPF, ten persons were ticketed for not wearing seatbelts, three for not wearing helmets, and two for not having license plates. Four persons were also taken into custody.

“The same Clean the Streets operation at the end of February resulted in another six scooters seized and 18 persons ticketed for various traffic offences,” the RVIPF said in a press release.

Acting Superintendent Dariel Robinson noted that while 'Operation Clean the Streets' should be considered a success, violators continue to deliberately disregard the laws.

Behaviour troubling - Mr Robinson

“It is troubling that there are so many people from all walks of life who blatantly ignore the traffic laws; laws intended to protect drivers, riders and other road users and allow for a safer environment to travel.

According to Mr Robinson, in civil societies, the police should not have to force laws on citizens; rather, persons should want to follow them.

“While enforcement and penalties can be a deterrent, the greatest incentive to following the law is the realization that without rules, boundaries and guidelines to operate, this will be a very miserable place to live. We are slowly drifting towards this place,” Mr Robinson said.

Good start but nothing like enough. This is the biggest public nuisance in BVI, a breeding ground for crime and a severe danger to those who ride these things on our dreadful roads. They need massively expensive extensive control or need to be banned. I know which I am in favour of.

Please continue to do so. Much appreciated. This place is getting way out of control with the negative bad behavior. Sheep is blaming the bloggers/threaders for the destruction of the BVI, the destruction on the BVI is the negative bad behavior, not the bloggers/threaders.

Arrest and charge anyone riding a vehicle, scooter, truck, car, with no plates on sight then search the vehicle and home. Anyone prepared to disregard these laws has something to hide or otherwise, they’d get themselves licensed and plated. I think that in itself would clean up quite a lot of the crimes being carried out in this Territory. And give us all some peace too.

@B to the S, ok, the police cannot do everything at once, but they are moving now. The thing is for them to continue daily and not once or twice then stop. Today in town I only saw 2 scooter riders with a helmet, the others were just flying by and dodging in and out of traffic without a care in the world with those stupid flip flops on.

With all this that's being done I hope they now lean towards those people who park along the road way obstructing the flow of traffic in some areas cause it becoming ridiculous....so let that be a focus also I'm tired of coming on the news every other day and it's complaints about scooters like it don't have other pressing traffic issues at hand.

This should be an ongoing daily routine, not an effort for points. Report on the efforts being done on all these unsolved murders. Scotland Yard needs to assist especially when autopsy results were never published.

That a good start but as we look around now it also a new breeding ground for persons bringing in vehicles with military disruptive pattern (camouflage) colors. Just a question what the color of these vehicles when going for insurance and licensing because camouflage is not a color. (this can be a crime reaction waiting to happen if not nip in the bud)
