RVIPF Officers deliver training to RTW security officers

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Security officers at Road Town Wholesale received completion certificates today following a comprehensive security training course carried out by officers of the Royal Virgin Police Force (RVIPF).

The three-month training course covered topics such as the law in relation to criminality, building security, self defense and cash transportation requiring both theory and practical applications. The length of the course allowed officers to continue in their assigned duties while attending the training.

Acting Commissioner of Police David Morris and Acting Deputy Commissioner Roy Stoutt both attended and gave remarks at the completion ceremony at Road Town Wholesale. Both shared their delight that RTW asked the RVIPF to carry out the training in this initiative and their hope that other establishments would follow suit.

“We are the agency legislated to approve security training plans and approve selected security officers under the Private Security Industry Act therefore it is opportune to have a hand in the training of these officers and equip them with the necessary skills to carry out their duties and effectively provide security to the RTW premises. This is that kind of partnership we always hoped to foster with private security industry,” the Commissioner noted.

He also shared the need for trained security territory-wide. “With the demands for Police officers becoming greater, so will the need for skilled security in and around business premises. Police officers cannot be everywhere and initiatives such as this which provide security officers with the skills to effectively undertake the work are very much welcomed.”

Acting DCP Stoutt in his remarks stressed the need for the newly trained security officers to make use of their acquired skills. “You now have the know-how to be able to effectively provide security for Riteway. The important thing is to put these skills into practice. The skills will be useless and even lost if they are not immediately put to practice,” he noted.

RTW Manager Director Simon Potter and Human Resource Manager Patricia Hodge, who was also present at the ceremony, commended the officers for successfully completing the course and relayed the importance of putting what was learnt in the course to practice. Head of RTW Security and originator of the idea for the training, former Chief Inspector Julian Donovan, chaired the ceremony.

Among the training instructors were Acting Chief Inspector Duncan Williams, Sergeant Westmore Jeffers, Inspector Selwyn Rock, Sergeant Tilda Henry, Sergeant Ivor Fraser, and Constables Durville Carty and Bruce Huggins.

Schupps. I guess this means the police officers who work as security officers at rite ways will be out of a job soon.
