RVIPF had surveillance on Matthew D. Hazell before arrest – Court hears

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Matthew D. Hazell, who is charged with attempted murder, was considered to be a flight risk and was denied bail when he appeared before Magistrate Ayana Baptiste-DaBreo on June 10, 2015.

During the prosecution’s presentation, it was alleged that the former employee of one of the territory’s popular banking institutions, FirstCaribbean International Bank, had access to guns and that he was under the watchful eyes/surveillance of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVPF) for some time prior to him being arrested for attempted murder.

The court also heard from Crown Prosecutor and Attorney at Law Ms Anjel Flax-Solomon that Hazell was a flight risk as he was not born in the VI but rather St Vincent and that he had access to boat to the extent that he was believed to own one.

Out of order

At this, Hazell’s attorney Valerie Stephens-Gordon rushed to her feet in objection. “This statement about surveillance is really, really out of order,” said Stephens-Gordon as she noted that such a statement paints a negative picture of her client’s character.

Hazell’s court appearance yesterday was for a bail application hearing after he was remanded to prison  for allegedly attempting to murder Police Sergeant Darville Carty as he was about to make a night deposit on February 15, 2015. Other charges include attempted robbery, unlawful possession of explosives and unlawful possession of firearm.

Before making her judgment, the magistrate cautioned the Crown about what should be said at certain forums. She also said that to say Hazell was a flight risk because he was born in St Vincent was not sufficient but it is her conviction that he is indeed a flight risk because of the seriousness of the charges before him and the likely penalties should he be found guilty.

Double “whammy” for the Hazell Family

It was a tough day in court for the mother of Matthew Hazell as she spent most of the day in court not for one case but rather two. In one instance, she was hoping that her son Matthew Hazell was going to be granted bail and in another it was to witness justice being processed for another son- Kani Hazell- who is battling for his life in Peebles Hospital.

The mother, whose name is not known by this news site, could not contain her emotions as facts about the condition of her son Kani was being described in the court, especially when it was stated he had lost an eye after being shot on Sunday June 7, 2015.

Trent Harrigan, 26, of Slaney Hill was remanded to prison for allegedly attempting to murder Kani Hazell.

Meanwhile, further details of the charges against Matthew Hazell can be followed via the link provided below:

Mother talk to your children when you see them doing wrong----Call the Police if you have to, you may save your child`s life by doing that--If they don`t want to listen to you when you trying to correct them, take it further

I know this mother would not condone lawless behavior ifrom her children. She was the first to teach me a memory verse apart from Sunday school. She taught me Eph 4:32 in the form of a song when I was a child back in St. Vincent. She may not even remember that. May God's mercies find her and give her double for these troubles. We bind up the spirit of death and murder released against this family in Jesus' precious name.
