Runaway Carr wins 5k season opener

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - James Carr picked up where he left off last year, winning the opening race of the 6th Blenheim Trust 5K Series on Saturday March 2, 2013.

The race, dubbed the City Circuit, attracted 54 participants including 10 in the power walking section.

The series, which ends in May, tours Tortola with stops on Beef Island, Carrot Bay and Paraquita Bay, before returning to Road Town for the finale on the City Circuit.

Carr gradually pulled away from the four-man pack over the first mile and kept the separation from his pursuers to win in the City Circuit race from the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, down to Peebles Hospital, through Main Street and Lower Estate before looping back to the grounds in 19 minutes and 13 seconds.

Steven Asson was second in 19:19 followed by Virgin Gorda’s Emrol Amsterdam in 19:32.

Nimade Onisaih, 11th overall, was the top woman in 23:14. Claire-Louise Whiley followed in 23:22 with Philomena  Robertson, third in 23:46.

The next stop on the tour will be on Beef Island on Mar 23, 2013. The race will begin at 7 A.M. at Long Bay beach. Registration will convene at 6:30 A.M.

The fourth and final race of the Dive BVI 5K Series on Virgin Gorda, is scheduled for March 16 at 6:30 A.M. This series leads into the Dive BVI 10K Series with two races on April 6 and 27 ahead of the 2nd Virgin Gorda Half Marathon on May 18.
