Ruff House crowned Hon. Fraser League Champions!

DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Playing with aggression, pace, power and skill, Ruff House secured the Hon. Julian Fraser/Save the Seed National Intermediate Basketball League Championship by beating Avengers 109-91 in the deciding Game 3 at the Save the Seed Energy Center on Sunday November 3, 2013.

Having won Game 1 by a similar margin, Ruff House had a lackluster Game 2 in which they went down 93-86, but put all that behind them in game 3 as they rushed into a 13 point lead mid way through the first quarter thanks to some accurate shooting from Kishaun Fahie and Ricardo Farrington.

That lead though was cut to just one point by the end of the first period when Jamez Stoutt found his length and Sandy Nadal splashed two consecutive trademark 3 pointers for Avengers.

The 2^nd quarter saw neither team gain any true advantage until Shamoi Dagou edged his team in front with two 3 pointers and then the same player was fouled attempting another from down town. Dagou made no mistake from the free throw line, netting all 3 and putting Ruff House ahead 49-40.

Dwight Brooks gifted Ruff House a technical foul by throwing the ball at Dagou after he had been awarded a blocking foul and Dagou stretched the lead to 57-44 at the halftime break.

A frantic start to the 3^rd quarter saw Nadal net another 3 pointer, but importantly a couple of calls seemingly went the way of Ruff House to give them some breathing space under the Avengers onslaught.

Now missing star player Radley Stephens, who was ejected during game 2, the Avengers though sensed a momentum shift with Gavin Frett powering them back to within 5 points, but a missed 3 by Nadal and a tip in at the other end by Winston Farrington, along with more free throws by Dagou, meant the 4^th quarter would start with the Avengers down by 11 points and the score 81-70.

That lead increased to 14 points on the back of more points from Fahie and Roger Farrington and the vast majority of the crowd were now silent, realizing the writing was on the wall with even Nadal putting up air shots.

The 100 point milestone was reached with 3.24 left on the clock, but with chants of “Goodbye… Goodbye” echoing around the Gym the game was as good as done.

Ruff House Coach Ricardo Farrington was pleased his team had played the way he wanted and come out with the win. “Yea, yea, yea,” he exclaimed, “last night my players didn’t have the energy, but tonight they came out firing and did what I wanted.”

Winston Farrington, who had been struggling with his shots all season, felt it all came right on the night. “I hit some crucial 3 pointers, we came out meaning business, we came in as the underdogs and are going home as champions.”

Losing Coach Rajah Smith congratulated Ruff House but also felt losing Stephens had cost his side. “I’m disappointed,” he said. “We came up short on defense, allowed them to run ahead early and had another defensive breakdown in the 3^rd from which we couldn’t recover from. Losing Bradley was a big blow to us. He is a key player and we needed him tonight. The guys played hard, but the better team won tonight.”

Ashfield Frett led the way for Ruff House in picking up 30 points, MVP Shamoi Dagou finished with 21, whilst Jeremy Telemaque scored 12 and Roger Farrington 11.

For the Avengers, Sandy Nadal top scored with 32 points despite missing some clutch 3 pointers, Jamez Stoutt finished with 24 points and Garvin Frett 14.

Good going Gunners n Jr Gunners U guys made playoff n championship but feel short, still proud of u guys. I really admire Mouse he was there day in, day out with the younger team. He is a true role model n he deserved the Best Coach award he won last night even though his team didn't win championship. We need more young persons in the community like him. To Mr Fahie n Sigar job well done with the big team. Competition was stiff this year but next year i know u guys coming harder.
