ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A City Development and Management Committee, which will be fully empowered and financed to comprehensively put a development plan and management system in place for Road Town, will be set up by March 2012 disclosed 4th district representative and Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool in an interview with this news agency on Saturday January 21, 2012.

“That committee will look at all the issues, and we would need to look at the legislation to do away with Wickhams Cay Authority, and in the meantime the members will be putting forward ideas for Road Town such as the Road Town Action plan which was developed and designed already, as well as, other ideas about town planning. So we will begin to put things in place,” Hon. Vanterpool further stated.

When asked who the committee members will be, the Minister replied that he will not reveal his potential list of candidates as yet.

“We are looking, and we are looking of how we are going to constitute it. But I can say this I will be looking at individuals who are going to contribute to the management of the committee and at the same time lend to ideas about putting forward legislations,” the Minister stated.

Under the new Committee, the post of City Manager would more than likely be re-introduced, the Minister added.

Hon. Vanterpool’s plans for a Committee surfaced on September 17, 2011 when he officially launched his election campaign at the Band Stand.

During the launch, he had emphasised that Road Town is the economic engine of the Virgin Islands.

“There will be no other conflicting boards or groups dealing with the development of the Capital, from Gene Hill in the East To Slaney in the west, as Road Town is demarcated in our Town Plan. The capital spans certain parts of the Sixth District, the Fifth district and the Fourth District. This includes Wickhams Cay 1 and 2,” he had explained.
