ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Rotaract Club of Tortola held their Earlyact Career Expo and Fun Day on January 23, 2016 at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, catering to children ages 7 to 11.

Learning opportunities by way of interactive presentations from persons of many professions filled the first half of the day and gave the children knowledge on a wide field of occupations.

There were a doctor, fire officers, K9 customs officers, a teacher, a choreographer, forensic specialists, musicians and other professionals. Following snacks and lunch, the children during the second half of the day had a chance to enjoy themselves by way of a bouncy house, video games, relay races that the Interact Club of Road Town provided.

“We were pleased to have 80 plus children in attendance who all seemed to have a great day. We were also pleased by the support received from the local Rotary Clubs. The Rotaract Club of Tortola pledges to continue our efforts on this front as we understand the importance of increasing understanding of careers opportunity, as we intend to make this event an annual one,” said a statement from the Rotaract Club of Road Town.

The Community Service Director and President Elect of the club Selvyn Dawson said his inspiration for the event came from his love and appreciation for children.

“Children are the future and I believe it's our responsibility to expand the minds of our future that gave fruit to have the expo and fun day. Because this event was a first attempt we decided to focus the event on our youngest Rotary family members - The Earlyactors,” said Dawson.

Future professionals

Speaking with this news site, member of the Club Jerrell A. George hailed the event a success.

“The event was very successful…very great. We had kids from some of the private schools participate. At the event they went through different careers from firefighter, to educator, to customs officer…a range of different fields and careers that they can explore.”

George said during the afternoon session it was time for some lighter games and entertainment and that part of this segment featured cultural games as well.

The Rotaract Club of Tortola extended a hearty "thank you" to persons in the community that came out and contributed to this event.

“Special thank you and acknowledgment goes out to all our presenters, the volunteers, the Rotary Clubs in the VI, DJ Sandfly, the St Georges Anglican Church, the members of the Interact Club of Road Town and of course the Earlyact Members of the BVI for without them this event would not have been a success,” said the Club in a statement.
