Rocas wins Dark & Stormy

With strong winds forecast and rough seas, the 18th running of the Dark and Stormy Regatta certainly lived up to its name, but all 30 boats duly headed off on the 20-mile sail. Photo: Provided
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Last Saturday, March 6, 2015 marked the start of the West End Yacht Club’s 18th Annual Dark and Stormy Regatta. A fleet of 30 boats took part in a race from Trellis Bay to Anegada.

With strong winds forecast and rough seas, the 18th running of the Dark and Stormy Regatta certainly lived up to its name, but all 30 boats duly headed off on the 20-mile sail.

With winds gusting to 30 mph, the course took the fleet out to the Dog Islands and then on to Anegada.

It was a varied fleet ranging from a 24’ IC 24 open boat to a traditional steel gaff rigged ketch to a Santa Cruz 70’.

All entrants completed the race.

The sun came out on Sunday for the lay-day with games on the beach and snorkeling, unfortunately, though, the ferry bringing the Sunday night entertainment MJ Blues from Tortola broke down.

Luckily, the Anegada Reef Hotel was able to find a local DJ to step in.

The pursuit race back to Nanny Cay on Monday was just as windy, the down side was not many boats could fly their colorful spinnakers.

Another party at Peg Legs left most of the competitors looking forward to going back to work on Tuesday after a rest.

Results:

1st – Rocas

2nd – Wildfire

3rd – Endangered Species
