ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Dekembe Parsons, 22, of Harrigan's Estate, has been granted $25,000 bail for his alleged involvement in the burglary of Sunshine Grocery Store in Chalwell Street, Road Town, on March 30, 2020.

The local man pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin on Monday, April 20, 2020, via Zoom.

He was also charged with Breach of Curfew and pleaded guilty.

Parsons was slapped with two months at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) in Balsam Ghut for breaking the curfew order.

He said on the day in question he visited a woman in Chalwell Street as well as his mother who is employed at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

The two offences occurred on the same day on Challwell Street between the hours of 9:00 am and 10:00 am.

Goods stolen

Crown Counsel Mr O’Neil Simpson said, during the investigation, police lifted fingerprints from a damaged window, which they suspected was the access point.

Additionally, Parsons, along with another man, was captured on surveillance cameras. Both were seen in the vicinity of the burglarised grocery store.

Parsons was met at the Road Town Police Station and he was informed of the report and cautioned but he did not reply.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was interviewed but he denied the allegations.

The Prosecutor said Parsons agreed to give samples of his fingerprints which were then compared against those found at the scene and they were a match.

Parsons allegedly told police he was unaware how his prints arrived at the scene.

At the end of the interview, he was charged with the offences before the court.

The stolen food items from the store had a value of $100.

Bail

Meanwhile, still on the burglary charge, he was granted bail with one surety in the sum of $25,000.

His bail; however, will only be accessible after his custodial sentence for the breach of curfew.

Parsons is to surrender all travel documents once the curfew has been lifted and is mandated to be at home by 8:00 pm daily.

His matter was adjourned to May 28, 2020.

Parsons is unrepresented.

If by chance he had the virus and didn't know, he could have brought the hospital system its knees if she unintentionally infected people there... smh.

Thou shalt not steal and the sadness, when they are arrested our tax money still have to feed and take care of them while incarcerated: breaking in to someone business or home is a very serious issue when you look at who doing this f@(& are young able body men....an injection to slow them go might be good

while some of us might want to compare the sentence of a fine for the tnt guy, with a custodial sentence for the tola guy,it must be noted that each case must be treated on its own merit.
From the facts outlined by the prosecution,it is clear that this guy, left his home, during a curfew for the sole purpose of committing a criminal offence.
The facts does not show that he took a chance to go by a friend to collect some cooked food, and on his way back the police catch him with the cooked food.
may be if that was the case, the police might have warned him.
but here you have a man who used the opportunity to steal, while the owner of the store is on lockdown?
In my view, the sentence is appropriate and cannot be compared with the case against the tnt guy.

I am usually amazed at the size of the jewelry these youngsters carry. You do not work and have such assets? Well, there you go! We have to pray for our young people and find ways to help them. Some will learn and unfortunately others will not. It is just what it is.
