ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – While road repairs and upgrades are necessary, more could be done to ensure the safety of road users especially on areas considered dangerous due to the layout.

This is according to talk show host and commentator Edmund G. Maduro who spoke on his EGM Show heard on Thursday night July 16, 2015.

He said that when the road is dug up for repairs, it is the duty of whoever is responsible to ensure that it is sealed back up and thereby not pose a hazard to motorists.

“Please look at your contractors…when they go and they dig up one side of a corner or wherever, it should be finished within a day or two just to prevent accidents and to prevent someone losing their life,” he said.

“As a matter of fact I am scared to death to go up the Belle Vue Road. There are some areas if you don’t know the road or you don’t know what you’re doing you will run right over,” he said, despite the fact that there are guardrails in some sections of that road.

“But there are a couple of areas where it is so dangerous you could run off the road and damage your vehicle or even kill yourself,” he warned.

He said that the protection of lives is his major concern. “Let us not continue the development in such a manner that because of that people get killed.

Maduro mentioned that the Sophie Hill road of late has a lot of loose gravel on it causing vehicles to slide down the hill and this needs to be corrected.

“Let us not make a good job turn ugly. I am saying to you look at the safety of the drivers on the road. It is important,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from Public Works Department or the Ministry of Communications and Works proved futile over the weekend.

Edmund you are so right. I had to travel that road twice for the weekend and I was scared to death. On Saturday traveling to and from East End over that country road the cars piled up and going down into town there is an area on your left if you are not careful your vehicle might fall over. This morning (Sunday), I saw someone in a brand new vehicle parked on the side of the road, I was wondering why he was there because of the road works but when I passed him I noticed that he had been hit by a hit and run driver. I too am appealing to the Government to have these roads completely as soon as they possibly can. I will also like to commend them for the good works that they are doing.

Drive carefully and with patience and there is no safety issue. Drive like an idiot with no patience and it becomes dangerous.

Because it is Edmund making the comment means it is not a valid? Come on people, even Edmund Maduro can make a comment that makes sense. Don't discriminate.

Yes Edmond you are right !!! ... But given the fact that the territory was at a standstill for MANY years, the current Govt is pressing to proceed with much needed upgraded infrastructure ( in multiple areas of the island all at once)!! So we all are PLEADING with motorists to proceed with extreme caution !!! Yes I agree that our work men are VERY sloppy in ensuring loose debris are kept clear off the road, but we must contribute and doour part to make it easier on theirs !!

I drive from east to town daily, the problem is not with the roadworks but the idiot drivers. Some of them passing the construction at high speed with no thought for there or others safety.

Now you see in the BVI you really can't please people. You close off the road its a problem, you make it a one way its a problem. IF the politicians would let the relevant agencies do their job then it would be better. Safety is always a factor, however it gets lost when you want a decent road but don't want to sacrifice a little extra gas if the road has to become a one way while works is ongoing.

The minister do not care anything about Virgin Islanders. Guess he plan to rush back to Anguilla when he gets old or maybe Santo Domingo. Look at the nonsense that is going on. The whole thing is set up for accidents. How many Virgin Islanders are getting work. Go on the road and you will see. We have to feed everyone else except our own. That is because the politician is an outsider. Watch and see who are holding head in house of assembly.a

The foot of elevator hill has been dug up for months now. They have gone through two designs already and it is still a hazard. Everyday there are three men there sitting in the trenches until midday but nothing is done.

A lot of the traffic problems I have seen are the workers directing traffic with no stop and go signs. Only a couple have them. Others are waving at you from a distance that we can't see if they are telling us to come or wait. All of the workers should have signs for us to see. This is a very big problem and can prevent traffic pile ups and accidents.

The issue I have as an East End resident is having the flat close and also fort hill. Those two places should never be closed the same time. I think also the work men have to work better. Cleaner and swifter. Road work is very dangerous and should be executed as quickly and efficiently as possible. I think we also need to think of drivers who can't handle the hills, vehicles that can't make some of these country roads. We need to think outside the box when doing these road works.

I had trouble a couple of days when I tried to go up the hill into Sophie Bay. The loose gravel caused my wheels to spin and I started sliding down the road backwards towards the cars behind me. When I pulled up to a worker asking if they would clear the road of loose gravel because it wahttp://www.virginislandsnewsonline.com/en/news/road-works-shouldnt-endanger-lives-edmund-g-maduros dangerous and I struggled to drive up it, he just shrugged at me.

Roads works happen in every country but the major issue here is these drivers don't seem to have the common sense to slow down when approaching a construction zone, which is no surprise since many of them apparently don't know how to use the indicator either...

I live on the side road in the picture and totally agree with Mr. Maduro. It is way too dangerous. Why is it allowed take so long?

In addition, for the residents of that side road: when the works started we literally could not get in or out of that road. No one gave any warning or explanation of how we could still get to our homes. On the second day, we found out that there was a really dangerous 'back route'. Those responsible should have notices up and let people know. They should have had a man there helping people negotiate their way down the 'back route' (which was basically steep down a crumbling bit of concrete in some one's yard with no room to turn at the bottom).

Unfortunately, they have now finished building the manholes in the road and, as I expected they would be, they are elevated from the surrounding tarmac. What does that mean? It means extra additional bumps that are permanent, will inevitably cause people to swing around on to the other side of the road and increase the chances in the long term of collisions. Further down the road, these protruding manholes are already doing that since they were built a few months ago. One manhole also has a broken concrete lid causing a hole that has just been left there on a primary road for months.

I am not local. I am an expat. But come on Virgin Islanders: take pride in your country and tell the authorities this isn't good enough. In most countries, people would not put up with it!
