ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Donald E. De Castro has slammed as a ridiculous idea the plan to separate the campus of the Elmore Stoutt High School, making the territory’s largest secondary school into a junior and senior high school.

De Castro, who is a member of the Elmore Stoutt High School Parent/Teachers Association, was speaking on his radio show Straight Talk on February 10, 2016 on ZBVI 780 AM.

“The project they are talking about is dividing the junior high school from the senior high school. There will be a big wall to divide the school. I understand [that is] what they are trying to do,” he said.

But he said that it would have made much more sense to build a junior high school at the eastern end of the island of Tortola, “rather than having that huge monstrosity of a junior high school and a senior high school even though they are separated by a wall.”

“I don’t know where they come up with these ideas from? Who did they talk to? Think about it folks,” he said.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn has touted the idea of dividing the school into two campuses which he said would translate into a better and safer environment for the students.

The controversial Minister has been ridiculed for the wall that he has just built around the Elmore Stoutt High School not just because of the idea not being seemingly well thought out but also because of the cost of the project, some $1 million.

However, the Minister has staunchly defended the wall that he said is meant to keep weapons from infiltrating the school grounds and said that anyone waiting for an apology from him for trying to protect the students and teachers of the school will “wait long.”

Students have told this news site that nothing has changed and knives and drugs can still easily get onto the school compound even after the "million dollar wall." They have also reported that there have been no reduction in fights on campus following the erection of the wall.

Here we go with deCastro again. When a plan was put forward to build the Jr High School in Paraquita Bay we found every foolish and ignorant excuse for not doing so. Some people said it was good farm land and others say our students shouldn't be so close to college students, but we have no problem with our students being exposed to drugs and other illicit activity right outside the current fence.

But who will Employ another set of teachers to go to the eastern end of the Island to teach? There are quite a few departments that share teachers from upper and lower schools. The biggest issue isn't the wall separating schools it's how soon will this all be done as another 300 - 400 students are on their way in Sept with no where to put them. we are already struggling with class room space as it is.

I though your idea was dumb until I realised that there are only 5 hours of instructional time anyhow.

Maybe if some of the kids actually graduated and moved on from the school there would be room. So many 18,19 and 20 year olds still at the damn school just hanging out. And the more we push to get them out the more they push to stay. It's just a place for them to come hang out and not have to work. It's one in particular is star of basketball team. These kids don't want nothing but handouts. Myron created this atmosphere but we are stuck dealing with it.

All the time I was thinking that it was a prison behind that wall and not a high school.

They have 3 location for a 4th and 5th form, the land what they gave buy water at paraquita bay, the land they bought from Elton next to Cedar School. The land they fill in Behind Skelton buildings at fish bay on the sea side, either one is a good spot for the high school just fpr 4th form and 5th form students and leave the existing school as the junior high school.

Why do we need a junior and senior high school again? Sorry it just seems weird to me that a territory under British rules keeps implementing American things....

It didn't seem weird when you were coming to the territory under British rule to get your hand on the "AMERICAN" dollar

Its funny how everybody bashing Myron and the government for something the darn parents who raised some of these children who act like animals, that are inside those very walls. I see first hand as a parent going to parent/ teacher meetings and see how some of these children behave in front of their parents and they do nothing. Blame the parents who didn't take the time and raise their children the right way!!!!!!!
