ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Richard C. de Castro believes that the customer is king and that his demand for better services can effect change at commercial banks operating in the territory.

He was speaking on his Speak Your Mind television talk show last night August 22, 2015 on JTV Live Channel 55.

A caller alleged that the bank he was with was charging a fee for him to withdraw monies not only by using the atm machine but also in the bank in front of a teller.

The man insisted that he was charged a fee of $2.00 when he went to withdraw his own money from his account.

Host de Castro advised the man to take the issue up with the bank as it did not sound right. He noted this is usual when one goes to an atm belonging to another bank other than where the account is located.

"That is my money I put inside there," the irate man said on the show.

To this de Castro said, "Maybe you have to shop around to other banks because I know some banks don't do that."

The man said too that this is not just for the atm but for the teller as well. He said he was made to pay the $2.00 fee when inside the bank making a withdrawal in front of the teller.

"They told me that just yesterday," the caller said.

"In that case if that is what they are doing I would just take my money out of that bank and put it in another bank because that's robbery," said de Castro.

He noted that while every bank has a right to make its policies people don't have to blindly follow them; they are free to shop around to different banks.

“We have some anomalies with the various banks in the territory and as I was saying to the caller we need to step up the vigilance with them and ensure that they are not doing anything unscrupulous. Charging a customer for saving their money should not be tolerated in this community,” he said.

He said that in his view an atm machine eliminates the need for a teller so he cannot understand why banks are charging for the use of atms in the first place.

Meanwhile, another called supported what the previous caller had said about the bank charges. "He ain't telling no lie," the female caller said.

People like you is why this place is going to helll in a hand basket. You are quick to jump up and defend a system that is completely out of line and obviously ripping us off. Somehow the same enthusiasm is lots when it comes to defending the rights of people.

The bank's make money off of your money and yet they still want to charge more and more fees!

If they going charge us to withdraw our own money, shouldn't we charge them for using our money to further gain interest on? This is robbery.

The Bank taking our money invest it and make money then they turn around and charge you for them making money from your money, Then they gives you a few cents in interest. If you say you not going join a bank and keep all your money, police will want to know how come you have so much money on you. If you don’t use bank much they charge you inactive fee, you used it then charge you service fee. I thought slavery was abolished.

what De-Castro must understand some of the persons and service providers in our territory will continue to abuse us simply because we have no leadership: our leaders only love the locals and listens to us just before an election; you don't believe me? when last any person from any of the political parties stopped by your house; before june 8th you saw them 3 or 4 time per hour: election done now, so no more visits from NDP,VIP,PEP,PPE or any other P...

All banks charge fees. The call is a senior citizen, and is not charge any withdrawal fee, he only gets interest . He misunderstood what the teller was telling him. The teller was encouraging him to apply for Visa Debit Card so he does not have to wait in the long lines ( but can withdraw at the ATM machine for free and can use the Visa Debit card for no hassel shopping as well). He misunderstood the message that was relayed to him. SO before we jump and accuse the banks we need to get our information straight............

@ Wilma K; you sound like the legal representative for the bank or a very loyal worker but you make sense: you know us black folks must had our 2 cents to a story( we have to spice it up)

I agree with what your saying, but at the same time, the bank should not at anytime charge fees to withdraw from our account without having the visa debit card. I know that a lot of senior citizens will not like to have visa debit, for they are just old school.

As someone who worked in a bank for many years, many years ago. let me tell you what is happening now. It used to be that banks helped people and HOPED to make money; Now banks are only interested in MAKING money and don't give a damn if they help anyone or not! CIBCFCB recently introduced a hidden charge. If you deposit a CIBCFCB cheque into your CIBCFCB account you cannot use the money for 24 hours. Mind you the money is deducted from the other account right away, but you have to wait 24 hours before you can get access to that money! BUT, if you cash the cheque and then deposit it then you have instant access. Now tell me, why is that? Because again they are using YOUR money overnight to make More money for THEM. Do the math! If 10 people deposit $1000.00 dollars in a day, that's $10,000.00 they can use overnight top make more money! And so on!. I cant speak for the whether or not the other banks have followed suit, but this is just another way they screw you!
