ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Tropical Shootout closed last night, Saturday November 29, 2014 with the National Champions, Young Legs, beating Warner University, 69-66, in front of a large and boisterous crowd at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, Road Town.

The match, hastily arranged after the no show from the University of the Virgin Islands, was in truth little more than a training exercise for Warner University, who used the game to give their rotation more on court time. However that did little to deter the “home” fans who celebrated another victory over the team that has won many friends and fans in the Territory.

“This game, we treated more like when we first came to the BVI,” commented Assistant Coach Donnie Arey. “We wanted to play a lot of our guys who don’t usually get minutes, so we could see what they can do and give the team a little more depth. We did spend all day at the Baths, so maybe we didn’t have the legs!”

Ray D. Victor, who played for Warner back in 2012, suited up for the Legs. “It was a good game, although they tried out the rookies, but when we threatened a blowout he put in the better players and made it a great game to watch for the fans,” said Victor.

Victor finished with 6 points, Jevon K. Serrant 15, Jason A. Edwin 7 and Kitwana Rhymer put in a stellar performance during the second half to secure rebounds, points and free throws to hold off the challenge from Warner.

Eddie Delegal, named as Tournament MVP, slammed home to put Warner up 48-46 into the last ten minutes, but Edwin put Legs back in front with nine left on the clock, Rhymer leveled with eight minutes to go, Serrant notched the last of his three “3’s” to put Legs up 55-52 and then Rhymer scored and was 100% from two visits to the Charity Stripe to make it 61-54 with 3:41 left on the clock.

A big block from Rhymer and another 2 for 2 from the Free Throw Line put Legs out of reach and as the game clock wound down, Kennedy H. Bass also went to the Free Throw Line and under a lot of crowd pressure was able to hold his nerve and sink two to make the Final score 69-66.

Devyn Baranaliskas top scored for Warner with 9, Josh Ellie 6, Jamari Maduro 6 and Antonio Ainsley scored 5.

Earlier Northwood had beaten Montreat, 75-65, in a game that saw a point swing of 29 points, as first Montreat were up by 15 and later Northwood had a lead of 14. The score was tied two times and the lead only changed once as Northwood used tactical changes to first shut down their opponents and then overpower them.

Chris Pinder top scored with 20 points for Northwood and both Shaq Symonette and Joshua Foster notched 12 for Montreat.

Warner were declared Champions after beating Montreat by a larger margin on Friday Night November 28, 2014.

You mean to tell me that this thing so poorly planned and funded by the government had a team, that had the least distance to travel not show? I just heard that the teams paid their on way down and for hotels. Question: what was the sponsors money and government funds going to.

This was a terrible event and the organizers should give it up or give it back to Steve P.
