ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Recently formed ‘grass roots’ political organisation, Reform Action Alliance (RAA) believes that returning Legislators who failed to pass critically needed laws, would be a clear and tragic blow to the Territory.

As such, the RAA has put forward a raft of legislation it believes are necessary for urgent passage by the current or any future government.

RAA in a recent statement on January 10, 2019, said it views these pieces of legislation as what should be the first line of business in any House of Assembly - current or future - because they address long overdue protections for the people and dangerously lacking standards and regulations for the restoration of integrity to the Territory’s governance.

Codes & Bills

According to the RAA, there are at least nine respective Acts, Codes, and Bills, which still languish in the House of Assembly, or await presentation or amendment, highlight the extreme seriousness of this issue.

These include: the Human Rights Commission Act; the Freedom of Information Bill; the Code of Conduct; the Register of Interests Act and Complaints Commission Act; the Consumer Protection Bill and Regulatory Code; the Environmental Management, Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change Adaptation Bill and the Labour Code 2010.

According to RAA Executive Member Cindy Rosan-Jones, “There is legislation to protect the people that was introduced nearly 20 years ago, and other pieces in need of amendment to close loopholes that weaken the law or allow for misinterpretation that could lead to the misuse of power for personal gain or other assaults to the well-being of the people.”

According to Ms Rosan-Jones, as a watchdog and advocacy organisation, the RAA intends to keep the issues of critically needed legislation, electoral and judicial reform, and the lack of basic human rights, in the public eye and high and has also invited concerned residents to join share their concerns with the grouping.

Which ones speak to passing these legislation through the House? Or even making it a priority? Try walk way and come back with sense and not hate. The young lady is correct. These need to happen now. I don’t want to hear who isn’t speaking to this kind of change.

There are other Bills that should have made it to the Legislature by now but we have been operating on policies in the meanwhile. For example, the Public Service Management Bill which is a replacement to the General Orders

We the taxpayers pay all House of Assembly members for their time and yet they feel it acceptable to continue to actively run and manage their private businesses while in office. We need leaders with a conscience to see that you must make legislating what you do full-time as a legislator, not as and when you can. Even worse when Ministers, additionally responsible for the management of our Government, function this way. One Mart, Pick-Smith, Orion, Skelton Concrete,

What is our BVI coming to, these people taking this election for granted. How can you come on the news asking for money to run campaign for your egotistical party; while we have the school children in an old building which we are leasing for thousands of dollars and still can't find monies to build or rebuild a new school? that is so unreal, yet you want us to vote for your party. Such AIRHEADS!!!
