PURCELL, Tortola, VI – “…If it not come by next elections please don’t come at my door, please start with the bus stop it’s not very expensive,” said one resident at the Purcell leg of ‘On the Road with Premier Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith and his Ministers’.

The meeting was held last night July 10, 2014 at the Purcell Community Centre where a small, yet very vocal, number of persons turned out to listen and have their voices heard.

Present with Premier Smith were Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn and Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering. Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton was said to have been on travel duties hence his absence.

“I have been living in the 6th District for a long time and I have a problem for many, many years back not just now and it’s about bus stops,” said one resident. He pointed to two areas where persons frequent to wait for public transportation, in the vicinity of Paula’s Bar in Baugher’s Bay and Qumars Trading.

“Every afternoon there are people sitting under the trees like goats and sheep waiting for a bus, so I want to know how much million it’s going to cost to build a new bus stop right there,” said the resident.

The very liberal man pointed to several areas stretching from as far as Beef Island where such facilities were put in while other areas are left without. “It’s time for us to upgrade our system in the country … this is nonsense, we have too much money throwing away and we don’t care about the people just to sit at the bus stops,” he further said.

Several other issues were put to the relevant ministers by residents including the call for an assurance that the vexing water situation would be addressed by the end of this year. “He (Hon Vanterpool) tried to assure us that by the end of this year the water problem would be in a better situation. I would like to ask him since it is now July he is so confident that within five months we would have a better system can you please explain?” asked the resident.

The problem of garbage in certain sections of the District was bashed badly for hampering the certain upward mobility of residents, posing serious health risks and at the same time devaluing the property of at least one resident.

The garbage receptacle being referred to was said to have been put in place by the previous Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government but no attention paid to since the NDP government took office. Other issues were those of lighting and other facilities at the Beef Island, Long Bay Beach, sewerage which appears to be flowing in the Ghut at OneMart Supa Store, flooding of areas while occasions whenever it rains consequent of the alleged re-designing of a Ghut called “Omar Hodge Ghut”.

The respective Ministers for every question asked indicated that they were going to address the issues raised. Hon. Vanterpool said to the one resident that he would still be knocking at his door come next elections as he will ensure the bus shed is erected. The Minister also tried to explain the dynamics of the water system especially as it related to the facility at Baugher’s Bay.

As it relates to the apparent sewerage flowing in the Ghut at OneMart Supa Store Hon Vanterpool said that he was not aware of that situation but would investigate with a matter of urgency and have rectified if so.

Dr the Hon Pickering represented Hon Skelton as it relates to issues of garbage noting that the concerns are being addressed. As he responded to issues under his portfolio he assured that there would be electricity and toilet facilities affixed on the Beef Island Long Bay Beach.

Hon Walwyn promised to have the Purcell Community furnished with gym facilities as requested by one of the community’s youths.

When is the Government going to get rid of those body shop in residential areas. This is a greater health hazard than the garbage. Just google the health risk of inhaling that paint for a prolonged period of time. People wake up and get the arse of them out of your community. Let them go Fish Bay where them can be a less hazard to people's health!!!

Alvera is the representative for the 6th district. There was an election to chose who the people of the 6th district wanted to lead them. Her absence on the top of that panel speaks volume. If the people of Purcell have any concerns shouldn't Alvera be the best person to contact. Isn't this what she was hired to do and what she promised during campaigns?

Alvera is the representative but she is also a backbencher. The Ministers are the ones that carry out the initiatives so try again with that nonsense. It's good for the people to see that the actual Ministers are there who can take their questions and deal with them directly, that way they can hold them accountable. If Alvera was on the panel, then you would say "But she's a backbencher anyway, where are the Ministers are they hiding?".. Blah blah, you will have a response regardless of the situation. The days of that type of stupid politics are over man. OVER! The people may not be 100% Pleased with NDP, but they will be reminded of what VIP is about and trust me, NDP will win next elections. Look who is leading the VIP. Are you kidding? hahaha!

We have a 9 district system and we have 4 elected at large members. Why the hell do we have a district system if the elected representative do not have a say or power to do what she was represented to do. Why was Alvera elected if "The Ministers are the ones that carry out the initiatives" The ministers have the most power but as the elected representative of the district Alvera is allocated a certain amount of money for her district needs. Also as a member of the ruling party she should even have a louder voice when it comes to getting what she need accomplished unlike the members of the VIP who would be at a disadvantage. The fact is Alvera is inexperienced and cannot hold her own in the political arena and her colleagues know this. Being a friendly face and popular person is enough to get you voted into government but it takes a whole lot more to actually be productive.

I must chime in here as a civil servant who knows the running's. Alvera may be inexperience but she fights for her people. If her ministers don't approve her project then there is nothing she can do. The little bit of money allocated cannot do major projects and even the small projects that can be done is still a hassle to get them signed off on. The budget effects the money each rep should get but that money is just on paper. When time comes to spend and do projects, there is always a money issue. To say she cannot hold her own in the political arena or I have seen her at work. The sad thing is that non of the political parties respect women. They do not vale them as elected officials like they do themselves (men). Alvera and Deloris will always have a hard time getting things done. I find her party be littled her by not putting her on the podium at this meeting. Premier's office is who sets up these meetings. Talking about being productive, Alvera have produced may be not as much as she would have liked to but I have seen her projects and I must concur she did a lot for the time compared to the last rep. Her ministers just needs to listen to her and try to help for I hear her cries to them all the time. Maybe she needs to consider another party or run independent.

Our rep was right there. The program is "Government on the Road" the ministers are the ones to answer question as everything the rep wants has to come from under a minister portfolio. Nevertheless, they could have let her say something to her people. It was not right the way they handled that meeting. Someone sent a message to the lady who chaired the meeting saying they want to hear from their rep and she refused to put her on to talk. Our rep is trying but she is not getting the help he need from those ministers and its sad because she worked hard to get elected.

I did not make it to the meeting, but reading what was the most important need for the people of the. 6th district give me pause. Bus Stop? What happen to these astronomical electric bills, food prices, crime, our youths going astray. We have bigger problems and these politicians know what they are but they don't give a f$$k. I won't say they can't come to my door, but they are not getting my vote. They are not doing anything to benefit the masses. What ever they do is selective, individualistic and self centered. This is not the kind of representation the people of this territory need. We need fair, all inclusive, honest, transparent and even handed representation. The NDP government has proven that they are not capable. What are we to do? VOTE THEM OUT.

And vote in who, pray tell? Frazer for Premier? Well, I guess it is 2014 and the people are now outspoken and ready with their opinions on what the NDP Government is doing or not doing. But when that spend us dry crew was busy stealing from Peter to pay Paul's credit card bills I didn't hear a peep out of some of you. What I will say and repeat it if I have to is NDP will win the next election because VIP cannot get back the reins of this country with Hon. F in front and only God knows who else and Alvin and his crew, not ready either. Sure the NDP Government is not perfect, but what Government is? What I do know is voting them out next election would be political suicide for this country. And no I am not MVW.
