ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The public continues to be extremely skeptical of voting machines being introduced for the upcoming general elections under a National Democratic Party (NDP) led administration.

A caller to the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) radio show ‘Let’s Talk’ on January 21, 2015 on ZBVI 780 AM made this known yet again.

The male caller asked about voting machines and said the public is “highly skeptical of such machines knowing the NDP’s track record after three years” and inquired what the VIP’s position was.

To this question, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party and veteran legislator Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) made it clear that he does not support any voting machines being introduced a year before elections. He said the people need at least three years of education on how they work and it will be unfair to bring this about for the elections coming up in less than a year.

The man, who is expected to be the Overseas Territory’s third Premier after the next elections and is the Third Chairman of the VIP, also spoke to the issue of voter identification cards.

Hon Fraser said he has issues also with the voter identification cards being introduced so close to an election.

"It is something I believe is necessary and should be introduced; however, I do not support it happening at this time...considering the potential for some unscrupulous persons to use it to discourage uninformed persons from voting," Hon Fraser said on the 'Let's Talk' radio programme last night.

The popular seasoned politician also stated that while the voter registration card may be simple you could “meet someone and they tell you, you cannot vote without a card, [where] will they go to find out? The easy thing to do is to stay home. There should be at least three years of education before they are introduced," Hon Fraser stated.

Last year, another caller to the VIP radio show raised concerns about the NDP trying to steal the elections, something that has also been discussed on social networks.

Interesting...These ppl do not understand that the young professional segment of the the BVI society is seeking a alternative to the incompetence which is currently passing itself as government...I for one am fed up with this NDP administration... I want to be able to confidently vote for an alternative that is competent in leadership and other important skills needed to rescue the BVI from this quagmire that it's now in....

Unscrupulous, thats what you are the fake GoonSquad. The real GoonSquad will always be an NDP supporter. The chairman of the VIP feels confident he can win the elections so using voting machines should not worry him. Shows you what kind of leader he will be..no guts so we will get no glory. We will be forever living like we are in a third world country under his regime.

"The man, who is expected to be the Overseas Territory’s third Premier after the next elections.."

He must be contesting a seat in Turks, Bermuda or Anguilla if he will be Premier of an Overseas Territory.

there is no need for a voting machine. BVI isn't big enough to warrant it. as for voting cards, this is a great way to limit people's access to the voting booth. People who have a right to vote can be turned away because they don't have a card? really? they are fighting the same thing in US which tends to target lower income, working, immigrants and belongers. Those who would comply would probably tend to vote for NDP. And given how "professional" other areas of new technology are, I doubt voting machines will be used without a lot of trouble.

When I suggested that NDP change their name I didn't mean for them to change it to the NTP - national thiefing party.
