ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Senior Opposition Member of the Virgin Islands House of Assembly Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) called for Drakes' Highway, which links Road Town to West End, to be renamed in honour of the late former Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt.

Further, he said that today's generation could safely say “thank you” to H. Lavity Stoutt for allowing God to use him so that future generations could benefit from the fruits of his labour.

“In his earlier days he may have been looked at by some as a nobody but that so called nobody as referred to by only a few, completed his assignment before its due date with such distinction that today he is known as somebody, whose life was led by God and touched everybody,” said Honourable Fahie.

He was speaking at the memorial service and recital held in memory of H. Lavity Stoutt yesterday March 7, 2016 at the Road Town Methodist Church.

Honourable Fahie cited the H. Lavity Community College, which he said the late former Chief Minister birthed with assistance from many persons. “Today H.L. Stoutt Community College continues to touch everybody in a positive way,” he said.

H.L Stoutt Highway?

“Drakes' Highway which in my opinion should be renamed H.L. Stoutt Highway, takes us from West End to Road Town daily and vice versa while allowing us to enjoy the breathtaking view of our Virgin Islands coastline, sea water and sister islands,” he said, adding that this accomplishment continues to impact everybody in a positive way.

Hon Fahie thanked the family of H. Lavity Stoutt for sharing him over the years before his passing, Honourable Ralph T. O'Neal OBE for listening to the voice of the people during his administration in making the day a National Holiday in remembrance of this modern day hero of the Virgin Islands.

He also thanked all past and present administrations for continuing to celebrate the holiday in remembrance of the great legacy of the territory's first Chief Minister.

Honourable Fahie called on persons to find their life's God-given purpose and said it is only then that they will be fulfilling the legacy left by the late H. Lavity Stoutt.

Yes, Fahoyie, think about our national heroes. Mr. Stoutt was the one who championed the cause for the comissioning of that road, getting navy ships to throw in dynamite to blow up some of the cliffs. I don't know what Sir Francis Drakes did for this country. He wasn't a pirate thiefing all he found in the Caribbean and enhancing the slave trade? Let Drakes go sleep. Nobody here know about him. We heard about H.L. and know about his works. The H.Lavity Stoutt Highway -- yes, Mr. Fahie. What them waiting for?

He never limited his giving to BVI. Who are you to decide how many deserving honours this man should get. What have you done for the BVI lately? May your service speak for you as his is speaking for him even 21 years after his death.

I personally would like to maintain original history. Lavity has the college, a monument, a holiday to remind people.
It is a slippery slope, we have Watley, and we have JR On'eal botanical gardens, but he started that.
I'm not sure a highway is needed.

What is Sir Francis Drake( Sir John Hawkins cousin), Vice Admiral, pirate and SLAVE TRADER contribution to Virgin Islands' history, culture, growth and development? Passing through VI waters perhaps on a piracy run is not worthy of recognition. Just wondering if any of the captured West African slaves that made that horrible, squalor-tainted, and inhumane trip to the BVI have any locals subtract. If so they surely will embrace Drake, would they not?

Rename the highway for someone that made a valuable and noteworthy contribution to the VI in the area of transportation preferably. Sir Francis Drake Highway does not connect to local consciousness. How does Drake relate to the local population, having been a SLAVE TRADER? And while we are at it, rename Drake Channel for a seafaring local captain. Surely, there are deserving ones.---Smith, Romney, Norman, Stoutt, Lettsome, Penn, Leonard, Thomas, Chalwell, Frett, Donovan, Hodge, Fahie, Malone.......etc.

Major Peebles, what he did? Must be pee on all the rebels.
It is time to write our history and make it plain for all to see
No slave catcher, no slave shipper,no slave profiter fortifying their names in this country
And we want back our African names too -- Kunta Kente and Ahmandingo. in your skin.
    Wickedness from those people ooo!!.
They owe us and we ready to cash in..
We start to make lil money here, they talking bout we laundering money
They weren't laundering and drying money before us?
Wake up, people. Get to know the knowledge of your past....
Don't let them keep us like some jack A**se.

What I am observing here is The Boomer is and has been for along time cashing in on Lavity's name and fame. The folks in the first district loved Lavity. By staying close and promoting his cause he will continue to hold office as the representative for the First District. It is clear that some of Lavity's tricks have rubbed off on him.

Nonsense. Romney leave the Treasury full of Doe for this man. He spent it wisely. He didn't create no wealth for this country.

Perhaps it is a good idea to name the High way after the Hon. H. Lavity Stoutt but wouldn't that lead to us forget our early history in the Virgin Islands?
