BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Students of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School yesterday March 4, 2016 heard the importance of denouncing bullies at an anti-bullying march and rally.

The march took place from Delta Petroleum service station at Pasea to the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School in Baughers Bay, on the main island of Tortola.

Corporate sponsors for the event were Delta Petroleum and Nagico Insurances.

Speaking for Nagico Insurances, Shaquilla K. Smith, Marketing Executive said that Nagico Insurances is quite happy to witness the Virgin Islands take a very important step to end the cycle of bullying in schools today.

She explained that bullying can take many forms – physical, verbal, social alienation, intimidation and cyber bullying.

Smith said that verbal bullying is the most common form as it is not easily noticed as physical bullying. She said too that the ease of access to the internet and other platforms today has made cyber bulling a very important threat to youth today.

“Sociologists have found that bullies commit these acts because it makes them feel better than everyone else. Often times they too have been bullied and may feel the need for revenge. Let us stop this cycle. Nagico Insurances is happy to be on board as we chart a new course away from the destructive part of bullying,” she said.

In making remarks at the event, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said that the initiative is one that should happen throughout all of the territory's schools and asked the organisers to do this.

“Initiatives like this are very important,” he said.

The Minister pointed out that schooling is not just to develop cognitive skills. “There are other things that go along to develop the total person,” he said.

He called school an incubator for life where it is hoped that the students develop the skills to live with other people. “And bullying is not cool; it is not a good thing, because it says that there is something wrong with your appreciation and feelings for other people,” he said.

Just wanted to let people know the above comment was not from the real Confucius.

I believe that this initiative is probably the most positive public statement in the past 10 years! I congratulate the organizers and those who took part in the event. Excellent! Let's hope more public displays such as this are organized and that bullies all over the BVI take the message to heart.

        Bullying is:

        NOT OK
        It is NOT cool
        It is NOT acceptable
It will come back to haunt you

If you feel the need to denigrate or humiliate someone, stop, go look in the mirror and tell yourself to smarten up.

It takes so much energy to be nasty. Why not try being nice for a change? You'll be surprised how rewarding it can be and everyone around you will respond positively. Negative energy acts like a boomerang and will come back to haunt you.

Think about it this way. What will happen in 15 or 20 years when you apply for a job and the person you are currently bullying turns out to be the boss or the boss's brother or sister or the person in charge of hiring?

STOP the bullying. A bully impresses nobody and it will get you nowhere in life.

I am not just talking to the children either. There are LOTS of bullies in various businesses, in government and in our churches too!

At this point, there must be a great thrust to teach teachers how to "TEACH" in a modern and technically and culturally diverse world.

A New York businessman for many years expressed a similar statement in an TV ad that impressed me, "An Educated Consumer Is Our Best Customer." I now say, an "EDUCATED Sutdent on Bullying" is our best "CITIZEN."

Never a worry or concern, the general population remains in poverty and lacking good education and no job prospects. Why would these politicians really care about the common man anyway, without a sure and resolute passion to help the nation!
