Red Cross Camp is a BIG hit!
Beginning from 9am to 2pm, children aged 6 through 13 took part in variety of learning activities. Their week was jam packed with team building exercises and training sessions covering the 7 fundamental principles of the Red Cross, First Aid, CPR, hand hygiene, earthquake & hurricane preparedness and fire safety.
Parent John Penn said “It is an opportunistic time for children to learn not just about Red Cross but first aid and it’s benefits…I could see the excitement in (my son) Koen’s face when he said he learnt to do CPR today…”
The children were quizzed each following morning and shared their learning on the various emergency and first aid training. The grand finale of the week’s sessions included a life like simulation of a car accident where 2 casualties were in need of immediate care. Each camp participant was assigned a particular emergency team role as they attended the scene. Their week’s training was put to the test as they assessed the scene of the accident, monitored the surroundings, checked vital signs and aided all injured persons in correct step-by-step process.
When asked about her thoughts on the week long summer camp, Sheona Nelson, age 9 said “It was fun. I met new friends and we learned about what to do in an earthquake. I want to come back again next year...”
British Virgin Islands Red Cross Director Helen Frett says she is most appreciative and wants to thank all of the volunteers who came and assisted with the week's activities. She plans to continue the summer camp next year for a proposed 2 weeks in July 2013.
