ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As part of the St. John Carnival festivities, five of Tortola’s race horses journeyed to St. Thomas to compete in the St. John Carnival Races where they captured two first places, and two second places with one in the feature race.

The races which took place at the Clinton E. Phipps Racing Park on St. Thomas, yesterday July 1, 2012, were represented by five of Tortola’s finest and most competitive horses; All Country, Really Uptown, Out of Wine, Gaffalione and Queteparce Cholito.

Speaking to the President of the Virgin Islands Horse owners' Association, Lesmore Smith, he reported that he is pleased with the performance of the Virgin Islands horses. “They did well.” He added that he is proud of all the horses and more training is needed.

The first race of the day was represented by Gaffalione, where the stallion earned himself the top spot in that race.

Two horses out of Tortola also competed in the second race, with Tortola’s All Country coming first and third by Queteparce Cholito.

Out of Wine, who participated in the fourth race of the day, was rewarded second place.

Participating in the feature race of the St. John Carnival races ‘Love City Classis’, Tortola’s Really Uptown placed second, with Bud White of St. Thomas claiming victory and a $6,500 1st place prize.

Mr. Smith stated that the feature race was a ‘shocking upset’ for him. He commended St. Thomas’ Bud White trainer for pulling through while Voice of Faith came third.

In mentioning the upcoming horse racing event, during the August Festival celebrations on August 7, 2012, at Ellis Thomas Downs in Tortola, he said with more training the horses will be prepared to redeem the prizes and keep them in Tortola.

Jokes you say? How could we joke when these poor old halfdead fleabags are being forced to go out on a track with a little man in a silly costume sitting on top of them. I would say the whole idea of these poor animals racing is a joke.

some months ago Lesmore said that he believes that the introduction of parimutuel betting will help to minimize confrontations in the sport which are fueled by the current practices that allow for underground man-to-man betting...but we done know the NDP does not have the balls to pass such a law
