ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Following allegations of bribery made by 9th District Candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP) at this year's General Elections Dr. Hubert O’Neal against incumbent representative, now opposition leader Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, the district representative says he does not know what the fuss is about and that the opponent should accept the results.

Dr. O'Neal recently stated that he may have lost to Mr. Ralph T. O'Neal at the elections because the district representative allegedly gave out last-minute contracts, which Dr. O'Neal described as bribes, and called on Governor Boyd McCleary and Supervisor of Elections Juliette Penn to investigate allegations of “bribery” among other things.

“If this young man has made the first attempt, the second attempt, the third attempt and he hasn’t beaten me, he thought he would beat me the fourth go round, and he didn’t, I think he should just accept what happen. I cannot see the reason for his going on,” the Opposition Leader told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview today Thursday November 24, 2011 from his office at the House of Assembly Chambers.

Hon. O’Neal explained that the contracts that he signed two days before election were for guard rails on the alternative road on Virgin Gorda and was given to several different contractors for which the money had already been approved.

“In fact the people who signed the contracts were willing to go to work on election day,” he pointed out. He further claimed that in 2003, the then Minister for Communications and Works Elmore Stoutt, two days before elections, was also signing contracts in Virgin Gorda and when he took office as Premier in 2007, he also met a contract that was signed by the then Chief Minister now Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith which he honoured.

“When I came down to office I met a contract signed by the then Chief Minister Mr. Smith, two days before election, a contract to Ira Smith Company for transport to Anegada and I made no fuss about it, I respected the contract until when the time was due and we advertise for other carriers. So I don’t know what the fuss is all about,” he stated.

The former Premier said a lot of persons have lost elections and even he had lost the first time he ran, but he was satisfied.

Take your losses like a man if the people of VG wanted you there you would of been there already. Maybe you should consider what the poles are telling you and wait till the people say they are ready for you to be their representative. Word of advice, nobody likes a sore looser it says a lot about your character, grace in defeat is respected by most.

All you ralphie cronies in Virgin Gorda speak for yourself, if 80 old man and woman gettting contract to build roads and install guard rails 2 dayRays before election aint bribery, then there aint no such thing asnd bribery. Ray charles and stevie wonder will tell you so. You should publish the names and let the public see who they are. For ralph to compare a ferry service contract to a bunch of old retired half dead and cripples, he is much worse that I thought, but not surprise. You won because of a few jokers, not the masses so dont fool your self. I hope the Governor do hs job and look and compare, it was very distasteful to say the lease. It was not a fair and just in the 9th.

It had a lot more than them signed off into other districts too. Difference here in that money was there to pay these. In 2007 they had to go find money.

Well two things i enjoyed in the elections, 1 How the voters in the 2nd District deal with Cline and 2 When Hubert showed his true colours after losing to Ralph - 4th time now! Brother, you felt you were entitled to oust Ralph and take up where your father Robinson left off, but it didnt happen. Well what if whoever contests the 9th district seat wins on a first try, and you lose yet again -5th try? You will blow like Soufriere or Kilimanjaro?

Bertie making more history for when Hon Ralph get ready to publish his book.... I love it !!!! Part of the book should read like this..... One weak O'Neal lost twice...his other weak brother lost 4 times..... We don't mind if it's an able 100 yr old awarded a contract... Once he/she is able... Let them work... The insult is when both parties keep doing this right before election.... Dr Smith and his Govt is guilty of it and Hon O'Neal and his Govt is guilty of it.... So what, call it equal!!!! Case closed!
