Raise age requirements for scooter riders - Sowande

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Social commentator and lecturer at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Mr Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru who is also the President of the newest VIrgin Islands Political Party, the People's Empowerment Party, has suggested that a ban on motorbikes may not be the way to go in seeking a solution to the many accidents around the Territory involving youths who handle the vehicles and suggested that a compromise be looked at.

Speaking during the recently held semi-finals for inter-secondary school debates at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall, Wheatley stated that life is precious and has to be preserved at all cost while urging that young people should prove themselves if they are going to be seen as mature enough to handle the responsibility of being motorcyclists.

He recommended an alternative be taken of raising the age of riders to the point where they are mature enough to handle the responsibility of being on the Virgin Islands’ roads, which can be seen as dangerous at times.

“Of course we know there are many benefits [of owning a motorcycle], but some of the benefits seem to be non-existent when you get a report of a young person being injured and at the hospital,” Wheatley stated, “It seems some of those benefits pale in comparison to the great tragedy of losing a life which none of us really want to see.”

He further suggested that educational programmes be implemented to ensure young persons are practicing greater responsibility. This may mean that more programmes are needed for young people to help them to demonstrate more responsibility not just in the area of scooters but in their education and in some of the decisions they make as well.

“If they’re not responsible, it doesn’t matter if you ban scooters or not, they will find some other way of injuring or hurting themselves,” he stated.

Not everyone can afford 8cylinder jeep...scooters consume very little gas compared to every other vehicle on the road-lowering the amount of fuel consumed by the territory on a whole...the territory stands to benefit from scooters, what we all need to endorse is responsible use of our roads-

The government needs to leave some sort of responsibility to the community and riders. Do not completely remove the opportunity for people to prove themselves, banning is not the answer. The answer MUST always work for both sides of the "fence".

To me as in several countries, Persons bellow the age of 18 should not be allow to have a riders or drivers permit. Such as in the voting rights, you must be above 18 years. most of the accidents involves teenagers. Bear in mind a child will always act and show some lack of control and responsibility sometimes. Therefore I believe if the law allows the age limit be implemented it will help in some ways. Also the area of modifying the motor-bike exhaust system should also be address as the noise generated especially at night is very disturbing. We are part of a real world and banning the use totally is not necessary.

A responsible person riding a scooter, who adheres to the same rules as drivers in cars should be allowed to have a scooter. They should not be allowed any special allowances such as speeding at a very high rate like most of them do, same as some idiot auto drivers. I notice most scooter riders think they own the road and just go speeding into oblivion without a care, until they run into an auto, and then they stop.

Who is from the pit of hell? The driver who is in full control of the scooter or the scooter who is in full control of the driver? See how silly this sound? Stop blaming objects that are man made on the problem when we can clearly see it is the operator for all vehicles and equipment that is being used recklessly. Can a knife or gun kill you all by itself or does it need an irresponsible person to do the dirty deed?

if you need to be 18 to drive a car then you should be 18 to drive a scooter.

Everyone is - rightfully - concerned about our young BVIlanders, but what about the tourists, who are resonsible adult drivers, but not familiar with our roads? The scooters are too light/ small for 2 grown, slightly overweight tourist coming down elevator road about 8 weeks ago, severely injury. The lady at her head, the man lost hist leg. In the last 4 weeks we read about 2 scooter accidents in Sea Cows Bay with Cruise Ship passengers. While I am very scared how our youngsters are riding the bikes, I am almost more concerned about renting scooters to tourists.
That should be stopped, before any tourist get killed. It was already close enough - and all of them had helmets! Are Scooters not supposed to have rental plates like cars???
