ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Controversial radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro continues to hurl accusations of racism in the territory and said this goes contrary to the Constitution of the Virgin Islands and continued to accuse Governor John S. Duncan OBE of doing nothing to protect the people.

“Even right here in the British Virgin Islands we are being discriminated against when it comes to the colour of our skin,” he said.

Speaking on his radio show The EGM Show last evening March 10, 2016 on ZROD 103.7 FM, he said that this ugly phenomenon is most evident where white tourists prefer to have a white captain on their boats instead of black ones.

“Some of our captains are not allowed because they are black. The so called visitors who come to the country, according to a charter boat company, don’t want to have a black man on their boat. Serious racial discrimination!” he said.

Mr Maduro also alleged racial discrimination when it came to property and other aspects of business and commerce in the territory.

He continued his accusation that Governor His Excellency John S. Duncan OBE continues to do nothing to stop the violations of persons' rights in the territory.

“Why is the Chief Executive through His Excellency the Governor not carrying out the responsibilities of the Constitution...should we have a Government which do not protect these rights. It is corruption and blatant wickedness for the Governor to sit down and see these things and I am not going to stop calling his name,” said Maduro. "That is why he was sent here, to ensure that our Constitutional rights were not abused," he said.

It is not clear whether any reports or evidence of racial discrimination as being alleged by Mr Maduro have reached the Governor's Office.

Mr Maduro has often said racial discrimination is nothing new in the territory and he was able to witness it firsthand when he was Chief Immigration Officer of the Virgin Islands. He believes, however, that it should never be encouraged in the Virgin Islands.

Provie it and the people will listen! Come up with a specific case. The majority of racist comments you hear in the BVI are directed by black people at other ethnicities, be they white, Asian etc. And I include those that come out of Maduro's mouth.

No BoBo, the quiet ones who make less noise is the deadlest. See, if you walking down the street and you see two dogs, one is barking and showing his teeth, the other one is laying on the ground all calm, people is afraid of the aggressive dog. He is not the one you should be afraid of. You should be afraid of the calm dog, he is the deadly one. I don't mess with quiet people because you never know what they are thinking or about to do.

The truth is tolans are the most racist and predudis towards outsiders. The want white friends and treat they own black people like sh*t. look how the tolans will look down on there own and will be nice to the white people, the go out there way just to help the white folks. And before you know it the white people have there business and tolans will be upset at them but I guess when you hate your own that what happens. Look at the fat guy that died and buried in the sea he help a lot of white people and not one of them came to his funeral. SO SAD.

Blacks in essence cannot be racists! Sure there is discrimination, bigotry and the likes. Racism is not about social but rather economics. Is the black community as a group ahead in rankings where 'race'(ism) is concerned? It is not just the Caribbean or the US but globally. How much do we as a people own in terms of resources?

maduro do you truly know what is racism: in the territory over 100 various nationals coexist and we all do so without any crime of violence against one another: back in the day, South Africa under the leadership of Ian Smith is a good example of racism: the United States of America is a good example of racism (down South)....

Correct. Who is more racist than most of these black people on this Island. I am just saying what I have seen and heard. The light skin blacks is racist towards the dark skin blacks. I have heard blacks calling the Asians chinks, calling the people from Santo Domingo Plaintains, calling the Arabs sand diggers, calling the people from down Island Garrots and monkey eating people, they call the Africans dirty smelly people, they even say white people smell like wet dogs. Now tell me Sir, isin't that called being a racist? That damn B......t about always calling whites the only racist don't fly. Check your backyard before you start putting the blame on one race.

I agree with most of what you say. However, Ian Smith was in charge of What is now Zimbabwe and was not in charge of South Africa.
Zimbabwe is one of the few countries left in the world that has state sponsored racism - however it is now the whites that are discriminated against by the black majority. The black on white racism there is much much more serious that the rather petty black on white racism that we have in the BVI.

Thanks for explaining. No one is racist against any black captains. The reason is the black captains is always trying to hit on the women. The White captains don't do that. That is the reason why people ask for a white captain. It has nothing to do with being racist. People just want to enjoy their vacation and be left alone.

    The Awareness of Racism-Discrimination-Biases-Prejudices-Bigotry-Hatred

“Racism” is a concept that is historically rooted in the oppression of blacks by whites (slavery, colonialism, apartheid, imperialism etc.). By definition, “Racism is the ability of one group to systemically subjugate another for ownership and control of wealth, resources, and power.” Therefore, since black people as a whole have never had the social, economic nor political power to subjugate white people, it cannot be called racism. The only reaction black people can revert to, up to this very day, as a consequence of seemingly not being able to wash-off-the-evils-of-slavery, is express and enact unsavory forms of hatred (against Self and others), prejudices, biases, and forms of bigotry and discrimination.

That only works in a country with majority white rule, wealth or power. That is not the case in the BVI where black people have the power and are the majority. In this case, you could say "non-black people can't be racist". Works both ways ...

Building courage - You are correct! Sad thing is that most people don't even know what racism truly is. Considering we are in the information age it would be wise for people to take the time and truly learn what it means and how it is not just about what a person say - its a systematic way of life that is deeply rooted in even the most subtle ways right here in the BVI. Its not so much as words - it is allot more about action. Until people wake up out of their fog (Stockholm syndrome) and really look around they might be amazed at just how deep the level of racism happening all around us and how quickly that are at blaming themselves for it.

@On line, it is true that persons of African descent are the majority of the VI population. Nonetheless, there are several forces at work that are promoting self-hatred and holding us in shacles. First, though Emancipation occurred in 1834, the Wllie Lynch conditioning( divide and rule) is still as strong and effectiive. Moreover, the twin to racism in the Virgin Islands is social stratification. There were/ are White, down street, up street, country, key and expats. Within the social classes are substratifications. Secondly, the VI is a resource-poor locale that depend heavily on external investment. He/she who controls the money has the power. Political power does not necessarily equate to economic power.

For example, after Integration in the U.S., Whites fled the inner cities and Blacks were elected mayors of those cities. Nonetheless, though the mayors had political power, they lacked economic power. The cities floundered. Reentrification is bringing people back from the suburbs and exurbs, displacing low income residents, pushing them into the suburbs and seedy areas of the cities. To break the stranglehold, we must let go of the mental slavery and embrace and be proud of who we are.

Edmund please get a life. What you describe is not a failing of the Governor.

Persons who are aggrieved by workplace discrimination should bring their cases forward through the proper channels i.e. by writing and filing complaints at Labour Department or bringing action through the Courts. Only then can we accuse the Government of doing nothing if they do not respond. You cannot expect a response to hearsay, rumours, and innuendo.

Please use your good intentions and assist persons to raise their concerns through established channels and stop poking the racism boogeyman.

Racism is not an illness, it was taught. You put a room full of babies together
Different colors, different nationality, those babies is growing to play together and have fun they are not looking at color. It is the adults that teaches them to be racist against each other when they grow up.
