Purple Dragon BVI cops 14 medals @ World Karate C/ships

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Purple Dragon BVI left their mark in Trinidad, attaining 14 medals at the recently concluded World Karate Championships at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port-of-Spain from July 17 – 19, 2015.

The team of twenty-four, two adults and twenty-two children, under the tutelage of Sensei Bevon Baptiste traveled to Trinidad last Wednesday July 15, 2015 and returned with 14 medals.

Comprising students from both the Tortola and Virgin Gorda Dojos, the BVI team copped 7 Gold, 6 Bronze and 1 Silver in Sparring, Kata and Weapon Forms.

The medal counts are as follows:

Sally-Ann Riley (45+ Beginner Women):        Gold – Sparring

                                                                 Bronze – Kata

Kevin Joseph (35-44 Beginner Men):             Gold – Sparring

                                                                 Bronze – Kata

Hannah Scoon (7-8 Beginner Girls):               Bronze – Kata

Ethan Faulkner (6 yr olds Beginner Boys):      Gold – Sparring

Amani Brown (7-8 Beginner Boys):                Gold – Kata

Xhayne Pemberton (7-8 Intermediate Boys):   Gold – Kata

Kaleem Lettsome (9-10 Beginner Boys):         Bronze – Kata

Arjahn Hodge (9-10 Intermediate Boys):        Gold – Sparring

Chad R. Willock (11-12 Intermediate Boys):        Silver – Sparring

Ruben Carciente (13-14 Black Belt):              Gold – Weapons

                                                                 Bronze – Kata

Xiiomar Gunn (9-10 Beginner Boys):              Bronze – Sparring

The World Karate Championships bring together the best competitors, teams, coaches, spectators, and officials from all over the world and the BVI’s participation in this tournament showcased local BVI talent on an international stage.

Coinciding events at the tournament included the 3rd Caribbean Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the 45th Year Anniversary of Purple Dragon’s Martial Arts Services.

    14 medals?! Why wasn't there a motorcade?! This was indeed an outstanding performance that the territory should of celebrated along with the kids.... it's not too late...Hon. Walwyn and his ministry should do something about it for they represented the BVI well!

    This is great news for the BVI! Congrats Purple Dragon! I hope there were minsters lined up at the airport waiting to welcome you back home...the same effort they came out during elections is the same effort they need to put forwards when it come to these things...were is the VI Pride?!
