PURCELL ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Our newsroom's roving cameras have observed for the past four to five days two sewer manholes left opened in the Purcell Estate area of Tortola.

The holes are not marked or cordoned off to alert motorists, pedestrians or others in the area of the danger or ongoing works. Over the past few days there have been reports of vehicles getting stuck in the sewer manholes, especially at nights and had to be pulled up.

The two sewer manholes are located on the back road behind One Mart SuperMarket, going east to Free Bottom and close to Martin's Variety Store in Purcell.

Cars already got stuck in opened unmarked sewer manholes

Driving in the area at nights has become very dangerous and unsafe as both sewer manholes, with the covers off, can allow for a vehicle to be stuck. A child walking in that area unsupervised can also fall in.

A check today Sunday January 28, 2018 found the situation unchanged, with both sewer manholes wide open and unmarked.

It is our newsroom's understanding that the open sewer manholes belong to the Government run Water and Sewerage Department.

Hazards on roadways

Director of the Water and Sewerage Director Mrs Perline Scatliffe- Leonard, when reached, said "An officer is going to check it."

There have been public complaints that both the government and private sector utilities have interrupted the roadways, contributing to hazardous conditions without proper notice to the public or proper signage when works are ongoing.

Gross negligence by the Water & Sewage Department. These open manholes pose a safety and health risk to personnel and vehicles; fatality(s) could have resulted due to the groSs negligence. The Director of WSD needs to take the corrected disciplinary actions; no slap on the wrist.

This is really worse than a third wold country, animals on the streets, Sewage in this town, internet services poor, children riding and driving without licences, water problem for days, roads not being repaired properly and a bunch of corrupt ministers of government who Rob the country and cannot be held accountable.
I bet someone will say the BVI is not a third world country. Although now they are on their knees begging the Caribbean development bank for loans just to spend it wild.

Two cents- it's not just this hole they should consider fixing or marking, the whole street should have warning signs with all the craters left behind by the rains and all the sewage running down the area.
