ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro said some public servants are intimidated because they are afraid of being victimized by elected representatives.

He made this comment while speaking on his EGM Show heard on ZROD 103.7FM on Thursday November 27, 2014.

“Some of our civil servants are intimidated because they are very much afraid of being victimized by our leaders who are elected to represent us…by our leaders who would victimize them for refusing to carry out discriminatory behaviour that I am talking about,” he said.

“Where is good governance? Where is integrity? Where is the law? Where is love?” he asked.

“Citizens are being intimidated to the extent where they are afraid to stand up and talk for their rights,” said Maduro.

He pointed to an example where a member of his family refused to have her concern addressed for fear of victimization.

“Just a couple of days ago I was close to the Immigration Department and I was speaking to a family of mine. I said ‘let me talk you up to the Chief Immigration Officer and have your matter corrected. He cannot refuse you your rights,” he said.

“That member of my family was too much afraid that they would be victimized and tortured. Elections are coming up ladies and gentlemen. Is this the sort of government we want to represent us?” he asked.

“I have heard a number of you saying that you are not going back to the polls. It would be the greatest crime you could have committed. That right to elect your representative is yours,” he said. “Do not be afraid to vote. Voting is your most important responsibility. Do not be intimidated. Do not let pride prevent you from voting for whom your conscience tells you to vote for,” said Maduro.

He called some of the elected representatives now sitting on the government’s side hypocrites for not speaking out against some of the current injustices plaguing the Territory, such as the refusal to Virgin Islanders access to some of the Territory’s beaches by property owners and the continued issues with the Labour Department regarding locals being unfairly dismissed from their jobs to make way for foreigners.

These kind of things only happening since the NDP came on the scene. No wonder some of the people who are interested in politics are afraid to declare that they are running for office.

You are quite right, your vote is the strongest weapon you have against this behaviour if you do nott use it you are submitting the corrupt, inhuman, society. So go out there and vote with your mind and show them that you as an individual are some one to reckon with.

I've had plenty of causes to deal with govt on numerous cases, and really some of the civil servants are
not fit for some of the posts they hold and because of that when they are removed from their positions
they cry victimization. That is my two cents
