Georges says for the Virgin Islands (VI) to decide on the way forward as a territory, a comprehensive public education campaign is needed to sensitize the public on their constitutional rights and civic duty. These questions he says, are concerning what options the territory makes as a whole. He said currently, VI’s potential future is distilled down to two base options which are to either maintain its status quo under the UK or seek independence. Photo: Internet Source

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - President of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), Dr Richard E. Georges says for the Virgin Islands (VI) to decide on the way forward as a territory, a comprehensive public education campaign is needed to sensitise the public on their constitutional rights and civic duty.

“I think we need to have a real concentrated and funded campaign to educate the public about their civic duty about their constitutional rights [and] about the political history of the territory,” Dr Georges said on the November 19, 2020, edition of Honestly Speaking.

Educating the populace on options

“The more informed, especially about civics and big politics the populace is, the better equipped they will be to answer these questions and to consider these questions in a serious manner,” he said.

These questions he says, are concerning what options the territory makes as a whole. He said currently, VI’s potential future is distilled down to two base options which are to either maintain its status quo under the UK or seek independence.

“Stay where you are is just not an option, its a sort of a limbo that we were meant to leave decades ago yes or independence, which I think is too reductive of an illustration of the situation we are in.”

Staying as is ‘not an option’ – Dr Geroges

He reiterated that the VI staying as is, a territory under the UK is not an option, but people need to understand the options and possible directions through films, posters, social media and other means under an educational campaign.

“We need to educate everyone in terms of where we [are] coming from that we needed to make a determination on a direction and these are some of the directions that are possible or we can talk about a brand-new idea.”

Dr Georges continued, “I don't know what that brand-new idea would be, but I think we can’t hope to come up with it if no one knows what it is we're talking about.”
