ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A total of eight hundred and ninety seven (897) sick leave days were taken by prison officers of Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) in Balsum Ghut during 2011, which has been suggested was mostly as a result of staff disgruntlement.

This is according to the HMP 2011 annual report, which was laid in the House of Assembly on November 15, 2012 by the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn.

Reporting on the challenges being faced by the prison currently, Superintendent of Prisons Mr Richard Holder stated in the report that “there continues to be a high number of staff who takes an issue considered to be a result of staff disgruntlement.”

The Prison Superintendent recommended that recruitment of new staff and implementation of new staff attendance systems and improved training will help reduce this problem.

Among the challenges that the Prison currently faces are that of increased population; the need for improvement of the prisoners resettlement process and staff recruitment.

On the issue of increased population at the prison, the report stated that more beds would be required in the prison and the population may be increased over the operational capacity of 120.

“The rising population continues to be a daily challenge and throughout the year, the prison populated fluctuated between 115-120 inmates. The ability of prison staff to cope with large numbers of prisoners reflects directly on their professionalism and management, whose role generally is regarded risky in an environment where security is paramount.”

Addressing the topic of staff recruitment, the report stated that for many years the prison has suffered staff shortages, overcrowding and budget shortfalls that have resulted in problems recruiting and retaining sufficient numbers of good quality staff. “The implementation of the proposed changes in staff, pay, terms and conditions will go a long way resolving this aged old problem,” the report suggested.

I am never amazed by comments made by individuals like “laughing Stock”..they beat-up on their own “race”; while the “other races” come into our country and “continue” to own all of the Yachting Companies, Diving Companies, Vacation Properties, Real Estate Companies & Trust Companies; NOT to mention the “other races” that come here and are paid 3-times what “our people” are paid- BUT our “own-race” we seek to crucify them...as a matter of fact when dem “other races” get here dem open their own Bars & Restaurants...now talk that; who vex vex!!!!!!!

Or is it simply sick leave being used as an entitlement for additional leave, to manage all those second jobs. Does anybody check, I suspect not.. Will always look better in a report to say sick leave rather than skiving.

but if the prison officers trying to get out from under Holder then one has to assume that the poor prisoners maybe subject to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment....

I can understand how these may have been accumalated. You havwe to remember these officer is subject to weather changes and they still have to do their job, they are arounf these random people so if one get sick all get sick and then they are on shift so unlike the regular 9to 5 if they aint feel good saturday they don't mean they could just lie down and hope to feel better on monday, they have to report sick if they were schedule to work.

There are other departments that accumulate way more sick leave than the prison. Why are we picking on the Prison, is it that we have our own agenda? Check most of the other government departments and you will see what I am talking about. I can tell you that we will be very surprise because these figures will appear very minute to those other departments.

Vino:Thanks again for reporting the news on national matters and allowing persons to express themselves under section 23 of the V.I Constitution, without any libelous statement:If the report states that "897 sick leave days were taken by prison officers" then that would be a misinformation on the part of the prison boss;because officers do not take sick leave:Officers report to doctors-certified medical practitioners, who are registered to practice medicine in the BVI. An officer may report to a doctor that he/she is unwell, and the doctor would diagnose the officer as being sick, suffering from a medical condition, and the doctor would issue a sick-report document, with recommendation of rest or etc..(sick-leave) My view on this report is that,"the officers did not take sick-leave:The doctors determine that the officers were sick, and therefore, the doctors place them on sick leave. Thanks again for allowing me to express my views on this matter.
