Principal recommends increase in text book prices at ESHS!

Government cannot continue to subsidize books at 60% - Hon. Penn
The cost for text books sold at the Elmore Stoutt High School are said to be "cheap" and the Principal has suggested that the rates be increased.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Principal of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), Ms. Melissa Amey, in deliberations with the 2012 Standing Finance Committee (SFC), suggested that the books purchased and sold by the school be sold at a higher rate.

Ms. Amey told the members present at the SFC deliberations that the books ordered by ESHS, specifically for its student population, were sold 60 percent lower than its actual cost, which resulted in students, and parents from other schools and other islands purchasing the books.

The Principal stated that it is very difficult to differentiate among the parents and which child they were purchasing the books for.

“The books were not always purchased by the students and if there were more parental involvement, the school would be able to better identify parents to their respective child(ren).”

Principal Amey gave an example, stating that if a relative comes to purchase books on behalf of a parent that could not come, it would be very difficult to deny the purchase of books.

Senior Administration Officer of the Elmore Stoutt High School, Pete Smith, told the SFC members that because the books sold at ESHS were 60 percent below their actual cost, word spread that ESHS have the cheapest books.

He stated that even if there was an identification system in place, an ESHS student can still buy the book(s) for someone who is not an ESHS student. “It is difficult to differentiate who should and should not be buying books.”

Representative for the Eighth District Hon. Marlon Penn stated that a system must be developed, because the government cannot continue to subsidize books at 60 percent.

The answer to this problem is to stop selling text book at the school all together. Offer all students to go on the textbook scheme where they will sign out all the requirerd text aey will only reinburse the school should they destroy the books or lose them. For those parents who would like to purchase the text books instead then they will have to do it from the private book stores.

How long did we really think that our government could continue to subsidize so many services in the Virgin Islands. We need to be more economically responsible, everybody have 2-3 cell phones, going hair dresser (men and women) to do hair and nails every week, eating out even for breakfast. When there were years of plenty we should have been saving and prioritizing we had plenty warning seeing the economic hardships our regional brothers were having and even the great USA. What made us diffent . Look at howw the government gets its money through taxes a and half the time we don't pay we steal from the government. if they should get a bailiff to collect outstanding taxes we will have enough revenue to run the country.

we need to go back to the old days. Teachers need to get up off their lazy backside and write notes on the board and stop making these text book authors rich. Sometimes we buy the books and the teachers go all year without using them. Another thing, the children would have them and still leave them home. Just like how the school have to economize, so do we.

Said like a real fool who knows nothing about the business of educating anyone....Do you expect the teacher to write the contents of the text on the board for the students? Is this what you call teaching Billy B? You need to get your mind right and stop talking foolishness!!
