ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI: Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL) says more youths are being encouraged to get into the culinary industry given the Virgin Island is quickly rising in popularity within the culinary arts.

"The BVI is becoming a culinary destination. We recognized that a long time ago and we invested a lot into the culinary arts,” said Premier Smith.

He was at the time speaking at "Gourmet for a Cause" a gala event hosted by Governor of the Virgin Islands His Excellency Agustus J. U. Jaspert and wife Mrs Millie Jaspert.

Retro Gatsby theme

Dressed to the retro Gatsby theme event, Premier Smith alluded to his government's push for more youths to become involved in the culinary art, noting that this will continue to add to the allure of the territory.

The event carried a $200 price tag at the Government House where many turned out aptly dressed to sample some of the world's finest cuisines prepared by Local and International chefs and to reach into deep pockets during a bid for several high-end auction items. Guests also had their dancing shoes on.

While the event was primarily to raise funds for the culinary department of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), it served to kick-start the BVI food Fete season which gets started on November 3, 2018, with a taste of Tortola set for the Queen Elizabeth II Park.

Gratitude

Governor Jaspert who stole the show on the dance floor was extremely thankful for the great turn out and patronage of those in attendance and others who bought tickets but could not attend. He appealed to all to continue supporting the youths of the college's Culinary Arts Department and said they are the ones in the industry to keep the Virgin Islands flag high on the local and international scene.

He also took time out to applaud local journalists for turning up retro to the 'T', "I have never seen you guys look so sharp… I almost didn't recognise our reporters," he said, while stressing the importance of fully supporting the BVI Food Fete 2018 staging and the inspiration it will bring.
