ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Effective today, March 1, 2012 the Territory's Premier has announced that Gun Creek, Virgin Gorda is now officially designated as a sea port of entry into the Virgin Islands (VI).

Below is his full statement that was issued from his office:

"My fellow Virgin Islanders and residents of the Virgin Islands.

I am pleased to announce that effective today, March 1st 2012, Gun Creek, Virgin

Gorda is officially designated as a sea port of entry into the Territory.

This is a promise my Government made since our first day in office. I have said it during a press conference on February 1, and now here we are keeping our promise to you, the people of these Virgin Islands.

As a port of entry, Gun Creek is not limited to the clearance of boats only; future development may include the re-introduction of a seaplane service to and from the sister island.

North Sound, of which Gun Creek is a part, is hailed as one of the best anchorages in the Caribbean and is a playground and watering hole for our residents and valued visitors throughout the year.

I have said this before and I will say this again. This is a bold initiative that will require investments upfront, but which we are confident we will recoup in user fees, cruising permits and indirect taxes as a result of increased traffic in the Sound.

Declaring Gun Creek as a port of entry is a catalyst for the development of a very important segment of our tourism industry. It will help to facilitate the development of our tourism product and improve the commerce of the Virgin Islands. This will include the development of commercial space for small businesses by Virgin Gordians.

As a Government, we believe that the increased convenience this new port of entry will provide for our residents and visitors will set us well on the way to improving a memorable experience for all.

The Immigration Department, Her Majesty’s Customs Department and BVI Ports

Authority are poised to provide the public with professional and exceptional service.

This official declaration is part of my Government’s stimulant package aimed at spurring investment, creating new jobs and business opportunities, and identifying new revenue measures, all of which combined will drive the economy forward. Thank you."
