Premier: Hospital parking lot project “imminent”

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The hospital parking lot project, which was suspended last year, will resume shortly since Government has a clear understanding of what is going to be done, the Territory’s leader divulged on NDP Radio talk show on April 3, 2012.

Dr. D. Orlando Smith was at the time responding to a caller who wanted to know the time frame for the project’s completion.

“…because we have many staff members who have to be parking as far as opposite Government’s House and beyond and then at nights we have to walk unaccompanied and it is not fair. I just want to know when it would be finished and lighted for safety,” the female caller asked.

However, Hon. Smith assured her that it was one of the projects that was discussed earlier that afternoon, and revealed “we had a presentation of exactly what would be done.”

The Premier added, “That work is imminent, so it would not be very long now before it would be concluded because we have a clear way forward.”

In an interview on February 20, 2012 with Minister for Communications and Works Mark Vanterpool, who has responsibility for the project, he had explained that the project was suspended because the Public Works Department (PWD) had to do some redesigning for the road “right in front” of the lot.

“We want to make the hospital more accessible, so we are creating what is called a turning lane going into the hospital which would mean that the parking lot will be reduced in size,” he had told this news agency. The project, which began in November 2011 to resurface the lot to alleviate the traffic congestion, was expected to be completed by mid-December 2011.

The resurfacing of the lot is on a long list of improvement measures to improve the aesthetics of Road Town. Once completed, the parking lot will be able to provide three times more parking and it will also increase pedestrian safety as dangerous pot holes and openings in the area will be fixed.

Approximately $250,000 has been allocated for the project.
